Default Advice solicited 991.2 gts cab vs 992 cab

With current market conditions

Wondering if anyone can give feedback on a 991.2 GTS cab with rear wheel steer vs 992 base cab in terms of fun and daily living etc.

Thx in advance

I had a 991.2 C4S heavily optioned before taking delivery of my 992 C2S. I will say the 992 is a more of a "grand tourer" than the 991.2. It has more tech, safety and slightly cushier seats. It rides a little smoother and the engine is a bit more powered but the sound is somewhat subdued. Ultimately it rolls up to do you want more luxury and tech or a more purist car IMHO. Each has its advantages.

Did you mean Rear Axle Steering? If so, I would get the optioned out 991.2 GTS over the base 992 all day long. As someone mentioned above me, the 992 does drive a little smoother, a little quieter, and has some tech upgrades. However, I really don't care for the front bumper, the exhaust coming out of the rear bumper, or the damn nub shifter. Also, it seems the interior just isn't as nice without having to option it out a lot more than the 991.2. I ended up just picking up a heavily optioned out 991.2 4s and couldn't be happier. The 991.2 GTS should have more power than the base 992 (especially if you tune it). Additionally, the RAS is out of this world and fun to drive on spirited runs up in the hills/mountain passes if you have that option.

I was deciding between a fully loaded GTS coupe and a 992S coupe and wound up with the 992 S cab after reading the Car and Driver S cab review.
  • 992 rides much smoother and has better handling especially front end grip due to wider track (as described by Motor Trend, Car and Driver and Road and Track) I had a 991.1 turbo in the past and I can drive the same on-ramps, twisty roads, etc at the same or better speeds in my 992 S cab.
  • Motor Trend dynoed the 992S and it made closer to 500hp. (I'm sure the GTS makes more than advertised too but I am not sure to what degree) The measured performance is better on the 992 S and 4S cars. (from the same aforementioned magazines) vs 991.2 GTS (both 0-60 and 1/4 mile, etc)
  • I didn't like the 992 styling when it first rolled out but since I plan to keep my car 4 plus years, I feel the 991.2 will look dated in 4 years much like the 997 does now. Honestly the 992 styling has really grown on me and with the clear brake light strip (soon to be avail) and the clear 3rd brake light the rear looks much better
I test drove both several times and yes, the 991.2 feels more raw. At the end of the day, they both have similar power, the main difference is that the 992 handles at least as good as the 991.2 GTS and really has impressive ride quality. This to me makes the day to day driving much more enjoyable. The other thing is the new 8 speed PDK is even better than the 7 speed, I didn't think this was possible but the Porsche engineers surprised me again.

@diononiz I love your profile photo of your car. It's making me want to get agate again even though I had decided on blue. Agate looks amazing, esp with the black ragtop.

I thought the OP was talking about just the BASE 992 Cab. If we are talking about a 992 S vs 991.2 GTS, then maybe my opinion changes a bit from what I stated above.

In November i went through a similar decision .. 991.2 GTS 7MT immediately or wait 4 months for a 992S 7MT .. one of the major reasons for me was the new tech. I've driven a couple 991.2's and the tech felt so outdated and if the 992 had a small improvement i probably would have went with the 991.2, but its a MAJOR improvement. Also paying a little bit more for beginning of the model cycle vs end of the model cycle was another reason for me. I had never driven the 992 so i was hoping they made improvements for comfort and drive ability and after getting my 992 it does feel better to me. Also all the 991.2's i drove were base with the standard exhaust and my 992 with PSE even in normal mode sounds louder than the 991.2's i drove

Well, the last part of your comment shouldn't come into play as you weren't comparing apples to apples by driving a non-PSE 991.2 vs. a PSE 992 (In fact, I would argue the PSE sounds better in the 991.2 versus the 992 in terms of cabin sound, roughly the same outside). However, if you want the upgraded tech, 992 obviously wins against the 991.2. Again, for sheer driving experience and overall thoughts, I would still choose the LOADED GTS versus the BASE 992. Now, if you said the LOADED GTS vs. a LOADED 992 2s or 4s...then the entire scenario changes as well as opinions.

Thank you. I was deciding between Dolomite and Agate but the Agate in the sunlight sealed the deal

I also drove the base cab and while it has more than enough power for day to day driving, the lack of a LSD made me purchase the S cab.

My comment regarding the looks, I think still apply. I do think as more and more the 992s roll out people will adjust and the 991 will look dated, especially the interior.

I drove 991.2 GTS with a manual, 991.2 GTS with a PDK and 992 S PDK on the track in Alabama and the 992 S felt faster and more stable. The interior in my opinion is a no contest win for the 992. I also think the 992 looks way better, but that is personal preference (I ordered the front sports fascia). I was originally going to wait for a 992 GTS cab, but I ultimately got inpatient and ordered my manual 2S cab.
