Porsche isn't really the brand to drive to show other people you drive a 911. A 911 is about the drivers connection to the car and the road. If you want to showboat, then yes, spend your money elsewhere. However, nothing DRIVES like a 911.

Lincoln Navigator L black label is over $100k. Save a few bucks and get the Reserve trim (the 2nd highest) with the short wheelbase with a few must have options and the car is still well into the $93k+ range. For a Ford F150. Granted, it has the Raptor engine, but it's a Ford ownership experience. These 911s are far too expensive once you add options that should be standard, but demand > supply, so there you have it. The economical 911 is the one that someone else has purchased new (hopefully with all option boxes checked).

Can you provide a link? I'm curious.
honestly, it sounds to me like you're not really a 911 customer... Porsche has some much less expensive models out there.. the 911 has always been their flagship and even in the 70's I can remember them costing 2 times as much as a Cadillac

In my opinion (especially in the Bay Area + LA) the 911 definitely doesn't carry any special sort of provenance. Are they expensive? Yes, but there are few other sports-cars that can pair luxury, performance and build quality. There are definitely some competitors in the space but they tend to either slide more into the true sports-car (McLaren) or model derivative category (M2C, etc.) To me, the 911 is the perfect balance.

This.

But I agree with some of the sentiment. While the 992 is a big improvement over the 991, it isn't necessarily in the areas all of us sports car buyers value. So I can see why some folks would just prefer to keep theirs and not upgrade.

A sports car is an occasional-use vehicle for me, and not a daily. For that kind of event (and it is an event), I prefer something raw and unique, but that won't depreciate as much as a normal vehicle sitting in my garage. Spyder fits the bill for now, though occasionally tempted to get something different. Just can never find anything better for the price.

Ironically, I just traded out my 991 C4S for a M2C, and I get more compliments and looks in the M2C than I ever got in the C4S. I would also argue that the majority of people buying 911's are doing so for the driving experience and refinement that comes with owning a 911, not to be a "hey look at me" poser. That's what most BMW's are for (yes I know, I now drive one, but it's soooo much fun to drive)

Bought new 992 = $137k (added more options than 997)

Asked my Dad on some previous Carreras he bought new:
Bought new 993 C2 in 1997 = paid $82k ($131k with 2019 inflation)
Bought new 911 Turbo Look Carrera in 1987 = paid $58k ($131k with 2019 inflation)
Bingo. The 911 was never, ever a middle class car. That's what the 912, 924, 944, 968 and then Boxster were for. It's always been an affluent, out of reach for most, kind of car.

When a brand gets to a level where you no longer are willing to pay, then pass. Shoes, clothes, accessories, in some cases neighborhoods.
But if it's still important for you to continue to have a relationship with the brand then there are many ways to keep the connection.
Buy new pay for the add ons you want. CPO cars are usually low mileage and well taken care of so there is that route.
In my company we raise our prices too based on what the market will bear. People vote with their $'s.
For me to be able to drive a car that has performance capabilities of most super cars and drive it every day is why I still buy the brand. Every time I'm tempted to switch I remember this.

Want value? Get an M4 or a C63. Good cars.. but no 911.

Also a 992 doesn't have to cost that much. Gain some self discipline. My 992 is a $108k build and will be absolutely perfect for real world use.

Porsche is very, very good at convincing people to buy meaningless options, that much is true. No one needs more than a C2.

Well 911 are far from unique, if you drive in LA you can see one in every other corner, for that "uniqueness" you are paying 130,000 USD (slight used 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus Super Sports car)

But honestly guys paying $130,000 USD for a car that is parked in every other corner in LA is no fun, I realized how non special these 911 have become when you see one very frequently, I just bought a slight used 2017 R8 V10 plus for 139,000 USD and let me tell ya feels much more special than a 911. People are just buying 911 because of the brand Porsche and 911 brand as well, to tell people hey I drive a 911, to me the 911 should cost around 100,000 decently equipped, in my opinion Porsche is overcharging people about 30,000 USD.

But how come I see one very frequently, to the point of being mundane in some areas of my city.

what planet are you living on? In the SF Bay Area where there is more money than anywhere else in the world, including LA... I might see a 911 once or twice a day... are rarely are they newer than 10 yeas old... but why should that matter? The car is great... if more people want them, then more power to the people.
