Default Luggage Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I wasn't sold on the $6500 fitted luggage option from the factory but would still like something high quality for my ED trip. What sorts of luggage are you guys using with your cars? I imagine soft luggage is the way to go but I am not well versed in this topic. I am not necessarily looking for Porsche themed stuff, just high quality items.

For the rear trunk, the best quality I've found is from Golla:

Not Tumi. Apologies to any fan boys/girls, but the quality of their stuff has slipped so far in the last 20 years. On a recent trip I was walking from the drop off at LAX to the terminal and the handle on my Alpha carry on separated on one side. By the time I got inside it had completely fallen off. It makes the bag virtually useless :-) Thankfully it was a short trip, but what a chafe. And when I looked at how the handle is attached to the telescoping bars I realized that it was about as cheap as could be. No wonder they don't offer lifetime warranties any more.

I have heard good things about Rimowa, but I think they may have been purchased by PE recently. If so buy before they reduce their quality.

Years ago I had a Briggs & Riley that was pretty bullet proof, and my wife had a TravelPro that was a tank and is still working well after 20+ years of getting manhandled by baggage handlers worldwide :-)

I second the bulletproof nature of TravelPro, plus their carry-on luggage is sized to be perfectly at the carry-on limit.

I did ED back in October and used 2 Rimowa Essential Cabin carry-ons. Not the Porsche themed ones. They both didn’t fit in the trunk so we carried one in the back shelf behind the seats. We also carried a soft duffle. My ED trip was 10 days so we packed light. I looked into different luggage options, including some fitted ones but ultimately just kept it simple.

When and where are you going to pick up your car? Our manufactory is near Frankfurt/Main and our German HQ is near Stuttgart, but we can send our Rennwerkstatt items all over the world.

Most of our Rennwerkstatt bags and accessories are in fact Porsche related when it comes to the fabrics and stitching, but all those models can be custom tailored to your wishes.

Here are our two best sellers, both soft shell bags:

Please let us know how we can create something cool for you.

And if you have questions on EDP, we might be able to help as well - two of our team members used to be part of the Stuttgart EDP Center ‘Werksabholung Zuffenhausen’... 😇

Is this strictly car baggage after you return or would it be pressed into general service? If you are going to use it for all your traveling will that include overseas travel?

Cant go far wrong with Rimowa generally; but also look at Carl Friedrik's Palissy 25 (or others) as an alternative.

I would preferably like to be able to use it for my ED in June, so overseas travel along with general service after the trip.

You likely want to stay with Euro sizing on the carry then, I'd cap at 19", they are getting better about it over there but it still isn't hard to find an airline that will balk at a 22 incher. If you look at the picture of the travelpro above you'll notice it has big wheels, in the US where your luggage will probably never leave smooth hard surfaces the smaller wheels will work, overseas you'll run into cobblestone, dirt roads, and these can be in no drive areas so a taxi/uber cant bail you out. You wont like carrying your 30lb check, 20lb carry, and laptop case a mile because the small wheels are falling into every crack and getting stuck and you see the small wheel people doing that now and then. You'll also want a shoe box in your luggage that is waterproof and it should be big enough to hold 2 pairs to cover the range of shoes you may want. It isn't a shoe fetish thing, you'll likely be flying in a comfortable pair suitable for walking and you'll want another suitable for walking as a swap pair in case the former get soaked or fail. Then you may want Tivo's or something else for hot weather, dress shoes for an event and so on. The best option are shoe boxes that collapse into the luggage or vice verse, that way you can use all the space. You'll want the main bag to have a strong handle and the height should be suitable for an adult of your size, usually only a concern if you're tall.

Weight matters with overseas travel. You'll want to get a baggage scale and weigh your gear and maintain an awareness of that if you're going to be bringing home goodies. Typically you're going to see something more than 40 lbs on a check and 20 on a carry. you absolutely should know this before you go though because occasionally you run into lower limits. Especially on the carry which on the odd flight (think regional) can be as low as 10 or even less. Ural Airlines for example isn't going to let you on the plane with anything more than 8 kilos and they will weigh so you need to be under. Something to think about is that even a large laptop with a power supply a little bit of electronic shrapnel and some paperwork can go over 8 kilos. In some cases you cant buy your way out by paying more, you get under weight through reorganization or abandonment or you don't get on the flight. Because weight is fairly important lightweight luggage is a huge help because you get more stuff in the same size package with the package itself being lighter. Here I think is where a decision needs to be made because you can pick any two from a group containing light weight, strong, and pretty. When you say high quality do you mean looks pretty or can hold up to actual travel? Everyone makes a suitcase that will survive a few two week vacations, something that holds up long term is not so easy to find and usually isn't going to be pretty and even when it is it wont be for long.
