We always travel with carry-on bags only (no matter whether domestic or international) and wanted to upgrade our existing hard-sided cases for soft-sided gear that meets international carry-on standards for our upcoming ED. (U.S. carriers are pretty lax enforcing carry-on bag sizes, but the Canadian and EU-based airlines we use 95% of the time pay closer attention.) After selecting a couple of candidates we did "fit" tests with a 992 C4S on the dealer sales floor to determine what luggage actually fits in the frunk, which is a slightly different size/shape that our previous 911 and Cayman S. Settled on two Briggs & Riley International Carry-On Expandable Wide Body Uprights spinner bags (U121CXW) that when stacked flat on top of each other allow the frunk to close with about an inch of space left between the gasket and the top of the bags (measured at the front of the trunk by the latch; plenty of space at the rear). Same size bag is also available with two wheels rather than spinners.
Those little wheels hate cobblestones and other uneven surfaces. Europe has lots of those surfaces and plenty of places where you walk the last half kilometer or whatever. Or in the case of people with little wheels, walk while carrying their 35 lb bag because they've gave up on rolling it due to the difficulty or because one of the wheels broke. Whether this matters or not depends on the type of travel, if your just dragging it through airports and taking a taxi to a major hotel type of traveler the little wheels are fine, if you get out in the real world staying in airb&b's and that sort of thing you'll quickly find they don't work so well.

Agreed that "spinners" and other wheeled bags don't work well on uneven surfaces, but these are easily carried as they are pretty small; best of both worlds. On this ED trip, bags will be going form airport to hotel to car...a whole lotta driving and not much walking. For our other North American 911 road trips, key criteria is 2 soft-sided bags that will fit in the frunk, which is slightly smaller than 997/991. For other types of travelling (EU by train, dive trips etc.) we have other bags.
