I believe there is more complexity to it. Suncor and the US based Sunoco company are not directly related. For instance, in Quebec, Sunoco gas stations were acquired by Ultramar in the late ‘70 and all Sunoco gas stations were converted to the Ultramar brand in 1997 with ensuing product standardization (that’s when we lost the Sunoco 94). In other provinces, Suncor was using the Sunoco brand name from their Canadian origin. PetroCanada was offering 94 fuel well before the merger with Suncor in 2009.
