Default Post-PPF issues

Hi all,

I have just taken delivery of my 992 GT3 with 550 miles on the vehicle. I drove the car home (1000 miles) and immediately sent the car for full-body PPF.

In my time driving the vehicle home, I experienced no rattles or any flaws. After receiving the car back from PPF on Friday there are two very noticeable rattles coming from the drivers side door and on the centre dashboard. I immediately let the owner of the PPF shop know of the rattles and he told me to bring the car in first thing Monday morning.

After a spirited canyon run this morning, I was greeted by one of my front headlights almost falling out of the socket as shown in the attached video.

Obviously mistakes happen and I was totally understanding about the rattles, however I want to hear what you would do if this was your situation.

In the most extreme scenario the loose headlight could've been potentially catastrophic if it hit a motorcyclist traveling the other direction. In a lesser extreme scenario the headlight could've fell out and caused damage to my new vehicle.

Don’t know about the headlights but the 992 has rattles. It’s well documented. I have it on my driver side door along with somewhere in the center of the center dash. There is a thread about the rattles. Not sure how those might be caused by PPF. Could just have came after some driving.

I'm going to guess they had the door panel off during the PPF process? I'd just ask them as some installs will require door panel removal, others won't. Depends how seamless of an install the customer is looking for. Regarding the headlight, that's almost certainly from when they removed the headlight during PPF install. Keep us posted, hopefully they'll make everything right and you'll be back on the road soon.

Why would they pull the door panel? ive PPFd 4 911s and never once did anyone remove the door cards. maybe take it to the dealer to get it inspected under warranty. Ive had my rear shelf in my 992 C2S rattle immediately after leaving the tint shop. tint shop denied, took it to dealer who inspected and noticed two broken clips done by the tint place, Dealer replaced for me under warranty no charge. just a suggestion

This is more common that you’d think. My shop gets bad PPF jobs coming in to be re-done or repaired often.

What region are you in? I can provide a solid shop if you’re close to Virginia or Los Angeles.

Mirror removal, I believe.

If they pulled your headlight to PPF, I'd double check those centerlocks.

Door panels are removed so that there's no seam for the film. Owner tells me there must be a loose bolt.

I don't want to discredit the shop, as the same place did a fantastic job on a collision repair for my Range Rover. That being said, after writing a check for $6500 (full body PPF and tints in LA)... is this really acceptable? This is my first supercar and also my first experience getting a car PPF'd. I wasn't expecting it to be like this. How do you think they can make it right?

It just sucks to have your dream car return from a week of PPF to be potentially unsafe and in a poor state with regards to the rattles.

Sorry to hear about your experience. At this point taking it back and working with the installer is your best option. I would request they revisit and inspect every part they touched to ensure it is fastened appropriately.

I realize it's a moot point now, but the question comes up often on RL, e.g., is it worth it to go all in on this type of install where parts and panels get removed. For me it's not worth it. There are very qualified installers who can work well with precut pieces. Had a whole RS covered tip 2 tip this way. It came out amazing and I never thought about it again. I know there are more positive stories than negative when working with the top tier installers who perform elaborate wraps. Even then, just prefer the least intrusive method. The stuff gets marked up over time so having everything perfectly tucked doesn't change that.

Good luck and enjoy your new car!

This is so bad, I have no words to describe it.

That being said, for $6500 I can't say I am shocked. You probably should have found a place in the $8000-8500 that'll do a better job on a $250k car.

I would have them check the other side headlight. The same guy probably removed and reinstalled both.

Frankly, I'd check it for looseness before I drove it anywhere. Same thing could happen but with a more catastrophic result.

It is very much not acceptable. Dont let it get twisted

they simply have to put the car back together

pm me the shop, I’m curious. I’m also based IN LA

Wow that's my biggest fear as always, of giving these cars to PPF shops. Most of them don't know what they are doing and don't have the equipment or knowledge to reassemble the disassembled parts.
