My experience - Dec 2022. On the Dec 15, I received a ED allocation for the CGTS 4.0. My build has been locked but I have not yet received a confirmation of manufacturing date. I initiated ED allocation requests at my two local dealers, eventually having four ED allocation requests in three states. My earliest allocation was 19 Mar and my last was 19 Aug. It was the 19 Aug out-of-state allocation that came through. None of the dealerships raised the ED issue as a challenge and only one requested a deposit. On the day I confirmed acceptance of the allocation I was asked pay $2500.

Theee best time to go imo is in September leading up to Oktoberfest. Great weather, kids are in school etc...

Thanks. Will they delay building an ED allocation for a later delivery date?

They will hold your car a limited amount of time, but the allocation is not automatically switched for a later build time frame (your dealer may be able to swap your earlier allocation with another dealership's later built slot though).

Thank you very much. My sense is to go with the flow. I wanted the ED experience as I purchased my first Porsche - a '79 911SC, many years ago while station in West Berlin. If you have any suggestions they are more than welcome. Again thanks.

According to this retired salesman, you're right...many dealers/salespeople, they don't want to do the paperwork:
