Not a Westcoast thing. Dealerships out here are fine about test drives. This one seems to be an outlier, at least with the gentleman.

Does no one make an appointment when going to shop for a car? I always do and have never experienced bad service.

Never. I walk in and request a test drive, ideally in casual clothes. It's very telling whether you're at a good dealership based upon how they treat you!

Buying cars on a whim is far more enjoyable

Which dealer did you end up making the purchase at? The guys at South Bay Porsche are more down to earth and relaxed. I've had nothing but the best from them and will continue to buy all my Porsche's from them in the future. I bought one Porsche from Rusnak in Pasadena only because I knew the sales person and the service manager is a relative which doesn't work there anymore.

BTW, the OP's experience sounds similar to what I experienced the first time I walked into our local McLaren dealer. Pretty much had to beg someone to even talk to me about the cars, much less get a test drive. Eventually just walked out.

While I am sure there still could be good associates at Rusnak, I have had indifferent experiences with them. The first car I bought was a great experience 5 years ago. The last time was not, and have never went back. I have bought several cars from
Gaudin in Vegas and they are the best. They are happy to let you drive anything you want. Even though I moved to DFW recently, I still bought cars from them and they ship anywhere.

I find it's far more telling how I'm treated when I've made an appointment. If I don't get their A-game then I know that's not a place to do business with.

Besides, why risk having a bad experience unless it's just to come to a forum to b***h about it? I don't show up at my barber, tailor, jeweler without an appointment. How is this any different? I want to ensure I have excellent customer service rather than play some secret-shopper game.

I don't like Rusnak.

Their coffee machine makes weak espresso. And no "Sugar in the Raw" packets.

WTF.

I had similar experiences with Rusnak, to the point that now I go to Walter's in Riverside for cars, and House in Pasadena for service. No reason to give those people business.

Walters great Rusnak terrible

Seems like a lot of old team members are leaving to other P dealers .

Sorry, last week I made an appointment with the Sales Associate who sold me 4 Porsches and then invite him to lunch. He kept me waiting 45 minutes. I left. How much should you take?

Wow not sure where you live, I show up at my tailor, barber and jeweler without an appt and get great service. About the only thing I get an appointment (reservation) for is dinner. That must suck to be so tied down to a very specific schedule and always be on someone else's availability.
