Hey guys,

I have about 2000 miles on my 991.2 now, and so far no issues. I couldn't help but notice that service is not due for another 18k miles. Are you guys following the factory maintenance schedule? I purchased my car ( not leased ), so I am more inclined to want to do the right thing for the machine - but I also don't want to change the oil every 3k miles and throw money out the window.

Porsche does not offer free maintenance like BMW so they have no hidden agenda to want to avoid having people get constant service.

The 'hidden' agenda you are referring to is marketing claims vs. engineering requirements

They don't really market that these cars go 20k between services ... its not one of their selling points when advertising the car... is it?

I recently passed 11,000 miles on my '15 GTS. Just did the 2 years/20K miles service. I did not have the dealer change the motor oil and filter, nor did I have them flush/change the brake fluid. I have changed the oil and filter four times already over the first 10,500 miles, the first one at about 2,000 miles. Since I drive this car at DE events I generally change O & F after every four track days. The first change was simply for break-in. The oil and filter changes on the 991.1 are very easy, especially after you've done it once. The brake fluid should be changed at either 20k miles or after 2 years, whichever happens first (according to the Porsche schedule). Going forward I plan to change the brake fluid every year, because of track use.

There are several threads on this 991 forum that will help you make good decisions for yourself. LexVan has some particularly good advice re choice of oil. I've gone with Mobil 1 5W-50 since draining the original factory fill Mobil 1 0w-40. He'd probably recommend going back to 0w-40 if you plan to drive this car in cold weather.

I usually change the oil in non-track Porsches every 5k miles, or every year if lower mileage. More often for 356s, even if synthetic. There are so many really knowledgeable guys here. If you can't find what you need in a search, just ask.

If Porsche offered an unlimited mileage warranty (or at least, say, 100k miles), I might give more thought to accepting 20k service intervals. Since the current warranty runs out at 50k, they face little risk for long term engine wear with service intervals at 20k, and oil changes at 10k. And since I plan to keep my car for a longer term, I choose to do what I can to extend the life and condition of the engine, and so will go no longer than 5k between oil changes.

Of course, if you plan to sell or trade in before the warranty expires, you can follow the official schedule and have no concerns.

You own a $100,000 car. Change the oil. Everyone will have a different take but from new I would change the oil after 500 miles. Then again after another 2500 miles. Then once a year or every 5000 - 7000 miles.

It is in Porsche's interest to make you come in for service often, that is, there is no need for Porsche to encourage you to change oil later than actually needed. Engines and synthetic oil formulations have come a long way. Changing oil every 3,000 or even 5,000 miles is unnecessary on a well engineered car like Porsche unless you track the car or subject it to other high stress use. Once a year oil change if u don't hit the recommended mileage (oil looses property with time) within a year is what is recommended generally. I follow that for my 991.2 C2S and I purchased (Mar '16), not leased, and intend to own the car for a long time.

Might want to read the manual again.

I still think there's an oil change every 10K. If you want to wait that long.

Run a bottle of Techron through right before that oil change as well

I wouldn't do that because that Techron would be in there for a long time, since a fair amount of the oil doesn't drain during a change.
