And yes, nobody cares about 911s. People hardly notice them and no one thinks your car is special. I'm pretty sure they'd be shocked at how much they cost. I got way more attention in my GT4 than my 911.

It's called an opinion. You can agree with me or not. I don't care.

I love my 911, but it's pretty common and, personally, I'd rather people not care what I drive. But feel free to go on believing that men shed tears and women shed panties when you drive by, if that makes you happy.

Default For A Different Take on Confrontation

Two years ago in July some friends of mine from New Orleans were visiting Boston. I planned to join them for an outdoor dinner on Newbury Street, but did not plan to take a Porsche, particularly because of the usual difficult parking situation. Unfortunately, my DD semi-banger '91 BMW 325i sedan refused to start. So, it was either the 991 GTS or my Guards Red '96 993 coupe. I drove the 993 on the horrible roads into Boston arriving on Newbury St at about 8pm. As I was going by their very small hotel a car pulled out and I just dropped into the vacated spot. Later that evening, as I was leaving it was even more crowded as a Red Sox game at Fenway Park had just finished.

I drove to the end of Newbury St, took a right which immediately gave me a Red light, so I stopped. It was a fabulous summer evening so I had both windows down and the sunroof open, sitting there waiting for the light to change. Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, this unique looking bearded fellow appears, riding his bicycle and probably carrying all of his worldly possessions. He stops, perhaps 10 feet in front of my car, and says, loud and clear: "Wow look at this, a red 911!" He then reaches back into his pack and pulls out what was obviously some kind of gun, though I could immediately see that it more resembled a squirt gun than a real one. He aims sort of at me and fires. The gun lights up with all these flashing multiple colors while a large stream of soap bubbles issues from the front of the barrel. He then walked his bike over to my door and we gave each other a high five. Of course he would have appreciated a few bucks for his performance. I was so overwhelmed and laughing so hard I'd have given him a hundred bucks, except for one problem: I had zero cash on me. I've been looking for him when I've driven into Boston since then, but so far no luck. I make sure I have the cash with me, just in case.

Pretty sure if you were driving a 1978 Chevette they still would have asked if you would have wanted a to buy a flat screen tv. The car had nothing to do with it. These guys patrol parking lots all day looking for a sucker.

So now everyone with a 911 is a sucker? 5K leather, 2K hidden extra leather, 300 for steering lightness... etc... OKay - maybe you're right?

Sheesh - he didn't even insinuate that.... But if you have a need to protect your life then calling 911 is too late.

That being said - the homeless guy is not a victim in this situation and deserves a beat down...

Always watch your surrounding just like you did. I had a meth head jump in the passenger side of my Porsche looking to rob me and he was met with the barrel end of my snub nose .38! Didn't kill him but I could have

Regarding concealed carry: The 8 hr. class NC requires teaches quite a lot about the law, probably 4 hrs. of the class. They taught about situational awareness (don't stare down at your phone like a girl), being aware of your surroundings (it's natural for me). They also suggested fleeing to avoid a shootout-a great idea, never pull your gun unless your life is threatened and don't try to save other people unless you want to step into the shoes of the person who you are saving (they could be the criminal-make sure you know the whole story). The law changes when you are inside your home and pretty much anything goes inside your abode. The gun is the absolute last line of defense and you better know when, how, and where to use it. In NC you have to let them take your personal items if you are being robbed and your life is not in danger-only law enforcement can enforce those laws. But if your life is in danger, then you are justified. If you are inside your home, you cannot really run, then you are justified whether they have a firearm or not.

I know a guy who got mugged on the street by three teenagers in a bad neighborhood. He handed over his phone and wallet like you're supposed to. Then they shot him three times for fun. It can be hard to know when you're in mortal danger.

Interesting how this thread morphed into a gun law discussion, but I guess that's Rennlist!

Colorado requires a course to get a concealed weapons permit. The course focuses primarily on the law, with no time at the range. I found it helpful, but only minimally. There were some discussions about situational awareness, and discussions of scenarios that you might face when carrying a weapon, when it's okay to use a weapon, etc. I think it's important to spend time getting comfortable with a weapon if you plan to carry it, which is exactly what I do. I only own 1911 style handguns, all in .45 ACP. The ammunition is the same, the funcationality is the same, the safety is the same, etc.

I agree with the points above; avoiding a bad situation is always the first line of defense. My philosophy on carrying a concealed weapon is that if I ever have to draw my weapon, somebody is going to die (either me or the assailant). I wouldn't draw my weapon unless I felt that I was in mortal danger and I was prepared to kill my assailant.

Back to the Porsche topic and avoiding scary situations; I think that's really a situational awareness issue more than anything, and I don't think it's unique to Porsche. The times that I have been approached by the "white van scam" guys, I have been driving other cars. Actually I was driving a white van the first time it happened, which is a bit ironic. I think it's important to remember that a Porsche is a nice car, and most people can't tell the difference between a used Boxster that cost the owner $15K and a new 911 that cost over $100K. If people perceive you as a rich Porsche owner, then your chance of being a target increases. If people perceive you as an easy target, even if you aren't driving a Porsche, then your chance of being a target increases.

Agreed. IB do seem seem to be everywhere. Pulling this site up without signing in, or without an Adblock app is pure hell. Completely unusable. It sucks in its native state.

Apologies for taking the off topic, even further off topic

In PA you can get your CCP with no class, no training. We took a self defense class which was two days, roughly 16 hours. Lots of range time, and lots of discussion/review of local laws. In PA we have "castle doctrine" which allows you to defend yourself inside your home. Laws change when you are in public. It can get rather complex - and you must understand what's allowed within the law.

Not every state has castle doctrine, and in some places you are required to retreat/run/avoid before you use deadly force. You can't assume that if you're in your home - you are allowed to use deadly force to defend. There can be conditions depending on the law.

I agree that anyone can be a target any time, and it doesn't hinge on what you drive - but a car that attracts attention can increase your risk in some circumstances. I also agree that most people don't know what a Porsche is, and can't tell the difference between models and value. But it's their perception is reality (for them, and therefore - for you the driver).

Always make time to train at the range with the gun you carry. I am very fortunate to have a Navy SEAL trainer who is one of my best friends lol. Taught me how to clear rooms and home invasion scenarios too.
Trained Chris Kyle and taught Bradley Cooper how to shoot for the movie.
--- Seeing how this turned into a gun thread lol.
