Somewhat scary situation b/c of the 991

lol at waving a gun at a white van. Talk about escalation. I own a weapon, but I don't carry in my car. Not worth the hassle. If I routinely drove in sketchy areas - I'd probably think differently.
The 911 is less conspicuous than you think. It's about as exotic as a BMW. I practically daily my car, but I do plan ahead. If I'm going somewhere borderline, I take another car. I don't see the point in risking it.

Guys,
If you worry when you drive then you will attract what you think. And then you do need to have an idea where you are driving and parking.
Now, if you were driving a Ferrari or even Porsche 918, then I can see the attention those car brings and limit your locations. But with 911, you should be able to drive almost anywhere.
If you are worried, drive something else as mentioned by others no point taking the risk.

Reminiscent of an experience I've had several times while driving my older 911's. Not TV salesmen, but hustler types offering to buy my cars hoping I have no idea what they're worth. A couple of times these people followed me for an extended period of time -- around multiple corners, into parking lots, etc -- and at night no less. In my city guns are illegal so I keep a Kimber pepper blaster in the map pocket. Had it in my left hand during these encounters. These people don't realize how much they freak people out with their antics.

Scam, been around years. If you bite, they follow you to the ATM, take your money and run, or give you a "sealed" box with junk in it. Lots of variants. I think the best response is to reference your 1911 (nice choice by the way), and offer them some bullets.

I had a homeless guy recently hassle me in traffic on 14th street Union Square NYC. He requested money and a picture with the car and when I said no he dropped a pipe in my car, yelled and walked away.
I guess these things are bound to happen but a 991 is definitely middle of the road as far as I'm concerned - somewhere between the hate you will get with a red Ferrari VS a regular non-luxury car.
Personally I'd have a gun if I could but the law does not permit by me.
Cheers

A 911 (any variant) is not necessarily "mundane" in certain areas of the country. It really depends where you live. In my area "nice" sports cars aren't as commonplace as a major metro area. They still attract attention. People go out of their way to take photos/videos. Happens all the time. Geographic location and density of "exotics" makes a big difference in the level of attention (in my experience). My Peridot Cayman R used to get as much attention as the Lambo I used to drive. It was surprising - but that Cayman R drew tons of attention.
If you carry a gun - you must be aware of the laws in your area, and whether your permit is recognized (reciprocal privilege) in any states through which you will pass.
I have a CCP and I sometimes carry - but I don't if I'm entering certain states. The penalty is far too great. I always carry gel-pepper spray in the car (and my purse). My situational awareness is always excellent no matter what I'm driving.
Brandishing a gun (just showing it, even without your finger on the trigger or pointing it at anyone) can carry steep penalties depending on where you live. You must understand the laws and be very familiar with the weapon and be ready to use it if you carry.
Rule #1. Always avoid conflict by any means possible.
If you don't understand the laws and make a mistake with a gun in your possession, you can find yourself in a lot of trouble.
And if you carry but don't practice at the range, or are not intimately familiar with the gun, you can find yourself in much worse trouble than if you didn't carry at all.
Being able to defend myself gives me peace of mind to a certain extent - but I will always try to avoid a bad situation and would never show I'm carrying until there are no other options - and of course I must be ready to use it.

the 911 is as conspicuous or exotic as a bmw? bmwusa sells approximately 400k autos annually, compared to ~54k porsches in the us, approximately 9k of which are 911's.

More a sign of how starved I am for Porsche discussion than I'm in love with this website. IB's properties are the suckage and this one is no different. At least it's been a few months since I got malware from this site...

shootout in the parking lot? who even implied such nonsense? the anti-gun hysteria is strong in this thread and in typical fashion is referencing absurd notions that were never even remotely proffered.
who said anything about waving a gun at a white van?

huh, what?

It's a joke.
There is no need to be paranoid - I don't see any evidence of "anti-gun hysteria". I'm a gun owning libertarian and the 911 forum is not exactly a bastion of triggered socialist millenials.
And yes, nobody cares about 911s. People hardly notice them and no one thinks your car is special. I'm pretty sure they'd be shocked at how much they cost. I got way more attention in my GT4 than my 911.
