Default My hot air intake: disintegrating foam

I changed my oil this weekend and upon removing the air intake and fans, this is what was revealed. The foam was disintegrated and crumbling away to dust. Surely some hot air from the engine compartment is getting sucked in. Seems like a defect in that they used foam that isn't heat tolerant. Anyone else see this on your car? I suppose it is a warranty item but a replacement will probably do the exact same thing.

I know that sometimes with parts like that they discover the problem later and make a new version of that part that resolves the problem.

I was curious and looked online. The current part number is 991-110-261-03, which is noted as a replacement for -02 and -01 versions. That may be the case here, so maybe a replacement will be good. ? This is even more likely if your car was in an earlier production year.

Nothing but weather stripping.

If you are out of warranty just clean it all off both sides and go to your favorite home improvement store and get some 1/4 to 3/8" self adhesive weather stripping and replace it.

Are you sure you don't have mice?

I think this has come up before. Faulty foam.

That's helpful. Gives me some optimism that a replacement will be an upgrade. The car is a 14, under warranty.

Tony posted about this issue before. See "Gudrun" thread, post 82

I hsd same issue on my 14 C4S and fixed in same way ss he did. If you do yourself, be sure to use the 3/8" width tape.

The engine sound pad in the 991 also disintegrates after a few years. The 991 certainly doesn't share any parts with the first 911 -- but what they do have in common is that Porsche still hasn't figured out how to make a sound pad that doesn't fall apart.

Also, a lot of the plastic parts in the engine bay are already becoming brittle because of heat cycling and tabs are breaking off. Some stuff in the 991 (like the interior) is a step up from previous models. Other stuff is a step down.
