Defensive driving 101 or is it 991?
Wow this guy is lucky...not sure if it was that or skill or situational awareness of one's surroundings as the article notes. But hey the driver got away with his life and also yes his car. Not what some suggest doing in such situations as its only a car and can be replaced but congrats to the driver and be careful next time!
What would fellow rennlister's do in such a situation? I will say that this is one reason why I am licensed to carry in multiple states! LOL

I have a Airborne Ranger badge on each of my cars... its a hint that i'm carrying... and know what to do with it.
Also - if you carry a bat in your car... make sure to keep a glove in the trunk. Your lawyer will appreciate this.

I am guessing the Apartheid laws were probably more responsible for the grinding poverty, low social status and subsequent crime amongst the black South Africans than Mandela.

Besides, we learned from OJ's trial that "if it doesn't fit, you must acquit!"
So carry a really small glove and, ideally, run carjackers over. Reverse and repeat for good measure.
Next, chase the getaway car and dispense justice or at least follow from a distance and call the cops

The driver did the best thing possible. Good situational awareness, stayed in the car and used it to get away.
IMO, the worst thing the driver could have done would be to get out, the robber already had his weapon out and had the drop on the driver if they did get out. If that robber was committed shots would have been fired, he clearly wasn't expecting the person in the car to react that quickly and speed away.
If it was an assassination attempt then shots would have been fired anyway.
Most people are easy targets in their car. Playing with their phone, not paying attention, windows down...
