Custom Front License Plate Bracket
#16
good one,
-curious, any metal on paint contact/friction issues over long usage (with water/snow/dirt etc)?
-since it's not screwed in, potential vandalism issues? [a while ago, someone swiped my Porsche tow Hitch Cover on Cayenne:-( ]
-Nice project for someone with CAD/3D modeling skills and OpenSource it for 3D printing. :-)

Thanks all for the positive feedback. I do realize this works only for cars without ACC, or any option that makes the center vent functional. Based on my experience with the Boxster, I have confidence in the tape holding firm long term (knock on wood).
I did think about using bolts to mount the plate to the bracket (or adding them after sticking the plate on), and still might do that. I do like having nothing projecting on the inside, in case any contact/collision ever pushes the bracket into the bumper (knock on wood again).
If people are interested, I can post a template for the cuts and folds.

And I figure this will be as secure as the rear plate, with standard screws.

Great job and great design. I might have put a piece of rubbing stripping on the back of it and pushed it up against the bumper for more rigidity, at speed of course.
I'm supposed to have a front plate, so far 2 years not stopped. And I go to a inspection station where for some reason the guy passes me without a front plate.

As for installation, I puzzled about this since once I put 3M tape on the bracket, it could not slide into place. And I did not want to bend the mounting tabs to make the fit looser.
Here's what worked: I put the tape on the bracket tabs and pulled off the protective covering, and then put some strips of plastic (from cut up ziplock bags) on the exposed adhesive, with the plastic doubled over. With the plastic bag strips in place I could slide the bracket into place, and then pull the strips out exposing the adhesive.
Sorry, I did not take any pictures but this diagram might help.

When I purchased my 911.2 GTS (CPO) the dealer said to me, "the front plate is in the frunk, we don't put them on and leave it to the buyers. I said thanks I don't intend to ruin the look of my car with it. I just keep the plate in the frunk and if necessary will tell any public servant that may have an issue it just fell off and I plan to reinstall. I live in CA and they are required so the state can take pictures of people running lights with traffic cameras. In any case no issues. I bought my wife a new MBZ C-300 coupe in May of 2017 and left the front plate in the trunk as it also ruins the front of the car, never had an issue in almost six years. What's the worse they can do. It's a fix it ticket. I won't fix it until I am forced and then only temporarily to dismiss the ticket. FWIW most cops could care less and even they appreciate a nice GTS. Cops like nice cars to and get it. They wouldn't do it theirs and not interested in forcing others unless there have a reason to want to hassle you.
