personally , not a fan of multi layered pearlescent finishes going back to Caddies and Audis from the 80s and recent Ferraris...esp since they are reportedly near impossible to match ( esp if one is ocd ) in various lighting , sun angles etc., after local shop collision repair due to spray direction , ambient temp and humidity even same painter all affecting result vs factory robot / conditions

In recent past, PAG charged twice the normal
cost of PTS for a pearl finish like 'Oryx White
Pearl Effect'.
So I would expect it to cost at least twice the
cost of PTS if/when it makes it to the approved
list. Presently PTS on a 991 is US$ 6,960.
We can only guess what the price would be if
'Saffron' is added to the 911 Turbo & Turbo S
color palette. It might be slightly less since
they consider it a perk to get folks to order
this expensive model.

PS 'Saffron' can be found in different colors.
I am very familiar with the spice since in our
family cuisine we use it to color/flavor both
'Paella' & 'Arroz con Pollo'.

Looks like a metallic version of Signal Yellow to me. Which is an awesome color. One of the few colors I'd pay PTS $ for actually.

As much as I have followed your excellent info about PTS, I must have failed to garner this bit of information about there being multiple cost tiers on different paint types for PTS. I never realized that "pearl" type paints could cost more than others. I thought if you were lucky enough to get a PTS slot then you could order any approved color for the going PTS upcharge (currently $6,960 USD, as you mention). So not all PTS approved colors are the same? This is news I may not ever need, as I am unlikely to ever get such an allocation, but I was confused to hear this. Thanks in advance for any explanation you can provide. Are there any other paint types besides "pearl" that carry such a premium beyond the normal PTS upcharge, like maybe ChromaFlair (although I'm not sure a ChromaFlair PTS has ever been approved)?

Porsche is the only company that spells Lemon, R-a-c-i-n-g...
Chevy of all companies had an awesome yellow mid/late 70s on the Corvette that was really close to that Saffron. Yellow with a deep orange hue. Adds depth to an otherwise flat color.

Not all PTS are equal...

Tom:
I refer you to a series of post on my old thread on the 991 forum in
2014. The additional charge for PTS 'Oryx White Pearl' was brought
to our attention first by a Swiss Rennlister (Suzy991) & then confirmed
by the sales manager of the Calgary Porsche dealership in Canada.
Note that the figures he quotes are in Canadian $. I believe PTS was
then US$5500 in our market.

PTS for the 991/718 models have generally been limited to normal
paints, uni/solid or metallic. It's on the few 'Pearl Effect' that they
offer where the price is different on the standard PTS program.
Porsche, unlike BMW, Mercedes & Audi, has refused to allow its
customers to order 'frozen' or 'matte' finishes. This is probably
due to avoid the warranty claims that this type of paint surface
will gathered in normal use.
But if you examine the PTS list for the 918s (see below in part),
you will see that PAG charged quite a bit more for paints they
knew were more difficult to do...such as 'Pearl White', 'Mirage
Metallic', 'Giallo Orion' & 'Arancio Argos'. And the price ($49K)
was much higher than the regular PTS of $21K on the 918 models.
Note that a color like 'Giallo Orion' is described as similar in stages
& depth as the new 'Saffron Metallic'. So I do expect the price to
be accordingly higher than normal PTS (should 'Saffron' be added
to the approved PTS list).

And of course they charged around $64K for the two Liquid Metal
paints which required special applications & unique orientation of
the metallic particles on the surfaces via overhead magnets.
But that was not the most expensive PTS of all time at PAG. Some
of the last 918 builds were done with special two-colors & designs.
They top over $100K for the priviledge.

Thanks, Eduardo! I do remember reading about the high prices on some of the 918 paint jobs, but I didn't realize this could trickle down to the run-of-the-mill Carreras, GT3s, Turbos, etc.
I really like the Saffron Yellow color, but if it will cost more than "normal" PTS, I would have to rethink it. If it was the same $3500-5,000 or whatever they charge for the standard "special" metallic color choices, it would really tempt me.

The Velocity Yellow on my friends Z06 looks a lot like the Racing Yellow. Flatter colors do look better on a car like that with many jagged lines than a smooth curvy car like the 911 that accentuates a deeper color like Aqua Blue though.

Re: higher cost for some PTS pearlescent colors like Oryx White, FWIW Porsche Exclusive design consultant told me last month at PEC Atlanta that Oryx *may* become a regular (same price as all others) PTS color for MY2018 991's as of the PTS window late this year. It's under consideration, she said.
This info came unprompted when when I simply asked about Oryx and how much it would cost in the context of my saying that I'd heard it cost a lot more than other PTS colors. Apparently it was one of many issues undergoing "testing" along with other later-to-be-announced options for .2GT3, results of which should be known in mid-June, she said.
I take that as good news for Saffron being less expensive than feared, although Saffron had no yet been revealed at the time of my meeting with her above.
Note that Oryx white is a standard (FREE) color choice of VW Golf R, a $40K car. So apparently Porsche expects 918 buyers to believe it costs as much to paint a 918 Oryx white as it does to build a Golf R and paint it the same color? Hah!
if I was buying a 918 today and given that choice, I think I'd buy a standard color plus the Golf R as a daily!

Yup, all of the recent Chevy yellows look like Racing, kinda a flat, lemon color. The mid 70s Corvette color I was referring to was nothing like that. Much more similar to Signal Yellow. A really deep richer yellow. Just stunning. They also had a lemony yellow around the same time, but that special one was lovely. IIRC there was a Corvette poster of the car in that color around that time.
