991.2 opinion

With notable exceptions, seems to me that it is mostly based on which one is owned... a lot of purchasing (or lack thereof) justification...
Trying to be objective and keep a big picture perspective, I would point out that both cars belong to the SAME GENERATION, with relatively minor differences/improvements.
Then, one can justify choosing one or the other based on personal preferences, no wrong answers...

As someone who's owned most of the major Porsches over the past 20 years, and currently owns a Singer, who's mother has a 991.1 c4s that I specced out to perfection...
...I'm ordering a 991.2 GTS because honestly I haven't driven a better road going sports car for daily driver actual utilitarian use than the 991.2 C2S with sport pack that I drove before placing my order knowing the GTS will be even sweeter. The low end torque (no not 0-60 time or launch time etc etc) thats littered everywhere in the power band makes it way more useful, and you still get more character than you do from the bigger 3.8TT in the TURBO delineated models. If you're looking for hair on the back of your neck when you drive the car, no 991 of any year short of an RS maybe will do it and a 997 gt3 or RS and 993 C2 does it better than that still IMHO.

.2 faster 0-60 means nothing to me. I have no interest in launching any vehicle. If it did, I'd buy a TTS and get there a second plus quicker. If PDK was the only option, I wouldn't have bought a 911. I'd have upgraded my boat or paid down my mortgage. Not bashing the .2 at all but this was my dream auto since a very early age. Glad I got in on it while I could still get a Sport Design manual transmission 3.8L.
I could drive my brother in laws 97 but this is just too good. Enjoy what you have. They're all pretty fantastic.
Point me in the direction of a .2 that looks better than this and I MIGHT consider it. That's not going to happen so I'll give a report when mine hits 200k mikes in about 8 years. (Big grin)!

No dog in this hunt, but all things equal and having to choose between a .1 and .2, I'd go for the latter.
I don't track my cars. Accessible torque makes city driving so much more enjoyable and I don't care about sound (actually loud cars make my tinnitus rage)
People laugh about Carplay being a factor, but let's be honest -- these are Carreras, not GT3s. Stuff like that does matter in a car that will get driven daily by many owners. That duality is what makes the 911 great in the first place.
In any event, the bigger change in this platform was the 991.1. The .2 takes the mission statement of the .1 and just evolves/refines it.
And the .2 does not sound like a vacuum cleaner. Not sure where that comes from.

I had never driven a Porsche until last year as I used to regard them as expensive, tail-happy, mid-life posing machines. After extended test drives in the .1 and .2, both of which were by far the best cars I had ever been in, I developed a stronger liking for the .2.
Yes, nothing like the N/A engine screaming away in the upper registers but as I have a tuned diesel (do I have to stand in the corner or something?) as a daily driver, the accessible torque of the .2 stood out in actual road use and you could rev it all the way if you wanted to with the power increasing linearly, rather than in a great rush.
As I live in a land of unmarked police cars, revenue safety cameras, speed traps, etc. the majority of the time I’m trying to go as quickly as possible attracting the least amount of attention. Exhaust in quiet, driving mode to normal, keep the revs down and it’s still a very fast car but without too much “look at me!!”. For my use case it’s almost uncompromised as a solution... (and it passed the Mrs test with flying colours, most unexpected )
And it still sounds better than many other cars on the road, just doesn’t hit the high notes of the GT’s but that’s OK because it isn’t trying to be one.

Previous 911s I drove were all 4s. They just didn't feel right for me. Then I drove a 991.2 C2, which was an amazing car. The more I drove it, the more I loved it. It made me smile, but the engine and exhaust sound didn't get me excited.
Last week, I finally drove a 991.1 C2S from 2015. It just felt perfect for me! People complain about the steering. It felt really sweet to me! People complain about the low end torque. It felt punchy enough for me, even in traffic! The car did what I told it to do, and rewarded me with giggles. It felt, like that car was made for me, so I'm getting it. Should arrive this week to the dealer in my part of the country. I'm checking emails every minute and have trouble sleeping...
There's a 911 for everyone, and everyone is different.

I would have been happy with either, ended up with a .2. Both are amazing machines. What irks me is the inconsistent opinions of some .1 owners. Some argue that 0-60 times don't matter, then climb into their .1 S instead of a .1 non-S because at some point, the extra power did matter.

I have the .1. It must be revved to go fast. Love the sharp throttle. The steering is precise, but somewhat lacking in feel.
It's driven daily, and also on track and AX (on different rims/tires of course).
Test drove the .2, loved the early torque. The car instantly felt fast. I also liked the much improved steering feel.
So in terms of intangibles ("feels") the .1 has a better feeling throttle, while the .2 has a better feeling torque and steering.
In terms of numbers the .2 wins over the .1 hands down.
I probably won't be upgrading, though. As someone has already said, the .2 is still the same gen as the .1. I will probably wait and see what the next gen (992 or whatever the code for it is) brings to the fight.

I've had the pleasure of driving most of these cars before/after upgrades. There is definitely something to be said with the advancement of technology of the new 718 and 991.2. Personally I think the sound issue is being overplayed. You can get similar excitement and a great sound out of a 991.2 as you can previous generation NA 911 with just a few tweaks. For instance below is a video of what we can achieve on the 991.2 PSE cars, which were quite impressive and enjoyable to all of us that drove/heard them.
What i'm concerned with is more the driver's connection with the car, the feedback that we can feel. I'm starting to miss that raw feeling that technology seems to be taking the place of. Easier to go faster with less skill, like the car is driving you rather than you driving the car. I could have went with a 718 or a 981, but got a 987.2 just because of this factor. I respect the new age stuff, but don't think it's quite for me...at least not yet haha.
