I still want a mechanical lever, isolated from all electrical systems. If nothing else, this is a clear and obvious fail-safe to make sure the car cannot roll (or that it can roll, if desired) when all electrical stuff craps out.

Besides, the automatic release with the seat belt on does not ALWAYS work... couple times I was bucking like a bronco and going nowhere, yesterday was one - no idea what the hell - it eventually releases but not the first time... (no warnings, no codes). That's one of my 2 beefs with the car, the other being the 7 lockout making 5->6th gear not a straight shot.. Nitpicks, that means the rest of the car is superlative ! I'm not hurrying to trade it in for a car w/ a real handbrake...

Germans were never really known for the electronics. Now if it came from Silicon Valley or Japan. It would work flawlessly.
