Test drove 991.2 - disappointed

I had the same reaction driving the first of the PDKs on a 997.2 in 2009. Out of the box the car will want to maximize fuel economy and be in 6th gear at 30mph unless you wake it up with Sport/Manual and your right foot.
(As great as PDK may be, still not for me in a sports/performance car)
Tiptronic was downright awful though...

I had a similar experience, was close to ordering a 911 cab but just didn't seem that much better than my S6. It definitely felt slightly slower (I know it isn't). Maybe I'm just used to the low end torque from a turbo v8. The steering feel was better but it didn't seem enough to justify a $70k premium over my trade in. I test drove a 991.2 C2s cab.

so i thought to get a 2009 997 turbo with tip, that should delievr the grunt that the 991.2 3.0 turbo cant, not many choices of used ones here in singapore, everyone tells me major turbo lag and tiptronic sucks.
I was thinking no way man, it's a turbo and having driven a 996 turbo manual the car is dangerously fast. and also having driven a 964 and 993 tiptronic those gearboxes work great with those engines.
so test driving the 2009 turbo tip, first thing i notice was it wasn't that fast on the streets, drove like a non-turbo, ok i assume cause street conditions
went on the highway, again not much power, so i did a test, put it on sport mode, car was cruising at about 45mph in 4th gear, i stomp on pedal to metal, so i counted, 1 sec, 2 sec, 3 sec, 4 sec...before the power came on. holy shiet, is this what all 997 turbo tip owners have to live with?
i went to test drive a ferrari ff after that, i made an offer on the ff...back to a nice v12 n/a motor

Three Wheelin'
It's essential to know what you want well enough to not require validation from others to be happy with your own choices. For myself, I would prefer any 911 to an FF which is arguably one of the most unattractive Ferrari since the Mondial, V12 notwithstanding.

+1. It looks like a BMW Z4 coupe on steroids. Plus its three times the price of a 911.

i been a porsche owner for past 30 years, love all the early stuff, just not impress with current line up (except for the RS)
correct, i think all these cars 997 and 991 would be a very different beast in manual.

Please don't tell the guys in 997 Turbo forum that their cars has 4 seconds turbo lag, it will bring lots of disappointment to their holiday spirits. You just bought yourself a very nice car, enjoy in good health.

If this is 930:
WOT..........................Full Power
Then this is 996TT:
WOT...Full Power,
And this is 997.1TT:
WOT..Full Power
IMO, a stock 996TT just isn't laggy at all. Maybe for someone who's means of driving is to floor it in too high a gear at 1300 rpms. But for the cut and thrust of normal driving, where you're thoughtfully choosing your gear just like you would in the same car if it didn't have a turbo, to my experience it is nearly instant big boost delivery on all of the post 993 Twin Turbos. (To be fair, I don't have any serious 991TT driving time, but I'm assuming it's only gotten less laggy.)

Unfortunately in the Hong Kong and macau markets (macau porsche owned by Jebbsen from Hong Kong) we can't get the 991 with manual even if one wanted it. I drove the .2 C4S and liked it but to each his own. I have a .1s to compare it to along with a .1tts and RS so I guess I set my expectations accordingly and it exceeded them. I personally like the slightly revised look of the .2. In macau at least it's largely irrelevant which model one picks in terms of performance as there are no limits above 80kmh and speed cameras everywhere that would be good to break the limit.
