I am 2 months out of CPO warranty on a car that is 6y 5m old and the engine lid slowly drops. I'll take one off at a time and test them on a scale. 130N = ~29 lbf.

I am not fully aware of the construction of these units, but this is not a hydraulic leakage issue, but a gas leakage issue. I take it they are gas charged because it states "do not heat".

Why not keep it simple? Put a spring in the unit with a hydraulic orifice for damping much like a suspension shock. Shocks go through far more hell and they last longer.

According to the dealer, 991.512.551.00 is now 991.512.551.01.

The STABILUS web site lists three struts for the 991.
12/2011 > 907755
02/2012 > 547327
09/2013 > 547566

NOTE: the STABILUS site does not seem to differentiate between models of the 991. From a search, the STABILUS 547566 = 991.512.551.80 and that strut appears to be for a 2014/2015 GT3 which might explain the much higher force (552N) due to the engine lid/wing.

These things fail because they're bored - most of us never have to open the bay

Hard to do an oil filter change without lifting the engine lid. I am working on using a trained mouse.

I just replaced the engine lid gas struts on my 2016 GTS with new generic ones by Stabilus, no. 547327. They have a 2 yr/24,000 mile warranty. The cost was about 1/3 of my dealer's price for the Porsche-branded struts, also made by Stabilus. I ordered them by phone from Pelican via 2-day priority mail - friendly, knowledgeable and quick. Installation took me all of 3 minutes .

The struts reliably fail after a couple years. I slip a piece brake hose cut lengthwise onto the shaft to hold the lid up for oil changes, adding coolant etc.

I tried paint roller, soft map.....but these get in the way and not many places to set a prop without it failing and lid falling on you... found this out trying to perform major service with bad deck lid struts. Wish I thought of the split rubber hose method mentioned earlier.

I ordered Stabulis generics from Pelican....

Rear struts are a cheap and easy replacement. Don't understand the need to McGuyver it, just buy new one and replace!

Does anyone know if these fail on the Turbo or GT3 or GT3RS? Wonder if their struts have higher load to accommodate the heavier deck lids.

29 lbf vs 124 lbf or more than 4 times as much.

A friend of mine who had a 993 just like mine ordered the wrong ones for his 993. The rear engine lid could have been used as a catapult which is great if you are BBQing burgers and didn't want to walk to all the tables. The worst of it was it was hard on the hinge points that were spot welded on.

I'd say, get the right ones. Hell they are about $25 each and if you have a 991, I am sure most can afford them.
