Rear hood struts
#31
Timely thread top. I just had the two rear hood struts replaced by my local dealer (Suncoast) under warranty on my '17 C2, part no. 991-512-551-21 "GAS FILLED STRUT"

Mine have entirely crapped out now and I need to use vise grips to keep the lid open.
Anyone know the opening pressure in pounds on the OE units? Pretty skookum ones exist out there but pressures vary wildly from things like 5-20 pounds to absolutely insane numbers like 300+ pounds.

I had my right rear strut fail entirely and the left one was getting weak but was still usable. Ended up replacing both myself with parts ordered from suncoast. Easy to swap out using a flat head to pull the metal ring to get it off/open

Same for me; just replaced these in addition to the evap line. 4 months left on warranty, so just in time...

Mine are total shot on my 2017 911. But it has 12 months factory warranty left, so I'll have a dealer replace it.

Most struts eventually will need replacing ... Aftermarket or OEM equivalents are cheap and easy to install with a drink in one hand .

I am thinking that unlike the frunk strut, engine struts fail because they are seldom engaged. perhaps opening the engine cover once a week would prolong their usable life?

Heat and vibrations I think are the primary killers of these. The lack of actuation could cause seal tearing if it sat for 6-12 months at a time and was opened roughly, think an a/c compressor seal.

I did find that the .2 seems to use a 38 pound strut though, so that'll help me search for high durability generics.
