Default 7 Speed Manual Trans Info

Not a 911 owner just curious to learn more about the 7 speed manual transaxle. Is it a complete redesign or just a slightly longer version of a G97 with an extra gear? Any possibility it could be retrofitted into a 997 or 996?

Unfortunately I can't answer this weird question. Weird as a lot of people would love to have the 6-speed of the 997 in their 991

The 7-speed is actually the guts of the PDK with some seriously mutated shift forks. This is covered in the sticky tech info thread available to members.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it looks like I need to get my post count up first or something...

Not exactly. The point was, you need to JOIN Rennlist.

I drove several 997 6 speeds before I bought my 991 7 speed and have to say I don't think it's honestly much different either way. No issues with 7th gear shifts or missing downshifts from
6th and ending up in 7th by accident or any of that.

He may not know what that means.

This is my 9th MT vehicle and my least favorite transmission.

Gates are too close
Throws are too long
Gates are too close
Too easy to catch R instead of 1 when stopped and vida versa
Shift **** is too high
Gates are too close

I have to constantly think about and consentrate on every shift to ensure I catch the correct gear which is total BS for a sports car.

But other than that it is great.

Just my $0.02

Not that it actually bothers me having 7 gears to work with, I rarely use the 7th gear even when cruising on highway. It's still a very good gearbox but if I have the choice, 6-speed would be my preference.

Maybe I am a fool but I enjoy shifting and the 7th gear gives me an extra shift on the highway. The only real issues in my opinion are 6-7 instead of 6-5 shifts (can avoid by putting the car in neutral but who wants to do that?) and 6-3 instead of 6-5 downshifts (a potentially expensive problem caused by the tight gating.

I haven't owned other Porsches but compared to the BMWs, Audis, Hondas, and Nissans I have driven this car easily has the best shift linkage and clutch feel.

As for 7th gear, I use it all the time on the highway. I routinely drive over 200 highway miles to enjoy 150 miles of back roads. On the highway, in cruise control, at 76 mph, in 7th gear, just under 2,300 RPM, I can get over 32 mpg. Pretty cool with a 430 HP car. ***now someone will post 'i did not buy a 911 to get good gas mileage'.......just watch***

I'm very happy with the 991's gearbox. Seems to take some muscle memory reprograming for most new owners (me included back in 2014).

If you swing through neutral for a second on your way from 6th to 5th I believe the 7th gear lockout is turned on, preventing access to 7th.

Your concerns about lever being too high and throws being too long are solved by $270 at Sunset Porsche and 2 hours labor. Get the GT4 shifter and have it installed. I plan on doing it soon.

As for 1st / Reverse, maybe my spring is stronger, but it takes concerted effort to go into the Reverse gate on my car. I've never mistaken it once
