I have to constantly think about and consentrate on every shift to ensure I catch the correct gear which is total BS for a sports car.

But other than that it is great.

Just my $0.02
I'm coming from a 6 spd MT in an Audi R8 with gated shifter so that may have something to do with my biased opinion but I agree some of the gears feeling super close(to the point that I was nervous to drop it down quickly on the highway during my several test drives). I'm sure over time this will become less of an issue as people get use to gear locations. I also agree the shifter is too tall but as others on the forum have suggested that's easily fixed. Honestly, and after driving a MT and PDK back to back for several weeks, in the end I couldn't resist ordering the PDK on my 991.2, It's just the most amazing transmission I have personally ever experienced. The manual does look so sweet in these cars though..

Why do you PDK people insist on barging in on threads clearly intended to discuss the manual transmission?

Honestly, after a Ferrari F430-F1, 3 years in PDK 911GTS, and a year in a Panamera GTS, I thought I'd be better able to enjoy the torque and powerband characteristics of the new turbo Carrera if I opted to row thru the gears with a MT. I'm looking forward to Alpine passes next spring when I take delivery. I'll still enjoy the magic carpet ride of my Panamera GTS on long boring highway drives.

You'd better enjoy the MTs while they're still available. Hell, even Porsche has recognized this with the 911R and the upcoming new GT3.

We bombed the Gottard Pass twice in our GTS Targa in August. Nothing better than a MT for that experience.

I love the MT in my Cayman and looking forward to this new MT in my 991.2. Given the sporting nature of Porsche, it's difficult for me to believe they would discontinue the MT... unless they become all electric.

Hi Chris. Are you sure the GT4 linkage fits in the 991.2 manual cars. I own 2017 911 targa 4S with manual transmission and I really hate the feel during shifting and started wishing I bought a PDK instead. It feels very rubbery and has too long of a throw. I really don't mind the gates being close, and only just the feel during throwing it into the gate. Perhaps I am spoiled. I own 2016 GT4 and also 2016 Spyder and I love the shifter on both cars. Not sure if it is the same linkage on both cars but they feel very similar. Both cars offer Probably the best shifting experience I have ever had and I have owned so many manual cars over the years. So it is possible I am being hard on the 991.2 shifter because I am comparing them to the GT4 & the Spyder. Aside from the shifting experience, the actual gearbox itself is really great and I really don't mind the 7th gear, and was really easy to get used to. I am hoping the GT4 linkage would fit in the 2017 targa, and that it would give me a similar experience to that of the GT4.

Could you please confirm if the GT4 linkage fits the 991.2 cars and if you don't mind share the cost with me. Thank you. Mark

This is what mine feels like ;-) Mostly the 6th feels so slanted !

But I still prefer that to a computer rowing for me.

I think you are onto to something here with the shift pattern.
I wonder if it is an adjustment that is out, or a "feature" of the trans

I have a .1 C2 MT with nearly 50K on it.Boy what difference breaking-in adds to this transmission. The more you use it the more smoothly it operates and these shiftgate issues disappear.

Give yourself some credit. It probably has more to do with you shifting smoother after that many miles.
