to each their own, but tire insurance for $1k seems like madness. a patch is $15 and works just fine ... I had 3 of them in different tires and tracked the car several times with no issues, which is OK per the chief Chicago region DE instructor (now plugs are a no no). A new rear pzero N0 is about $337 and a MPSS about $380 from tirerack, which come with free tire insurance for 2 years = get a nail and get a free tire. just my .2...

Remember, on most of these policies, a wheel must be damaged to the extent that the tire will not properly seat and hold air. If you bend one, and the tire still holds air, you will not get a free wheel replacement.

On the other hand, I've just been offered 5 years/unlimited mileage for $3K -- on a Macan I'm buying to keep the 991 company in the garage. A lot dearer than what everyone here had offered on their Carreras. What gives? I said no, without even thinking about it...

Exactly, and many times have you hit a pothole, bent the rim and while the tire will hold air, it can't be adequately straightened/balanced and vibrates at speed. Coverage for that? On my read of the Porsche coverage, a rough encounter with a curb isn't really covered because they almost always need material added to clean then up. Still I'd buy it for the tire protection alone

Makes sense. If you end up buying tires, you get the included insurance.

Could you comment further on the plugs, I just used a plug, seems fine to me. Is it okay for street use?

When You say "no limit", my understanding is that it means unlimited miles. But however there is a dollar limit?

This is the email I received after purchasing the car: (they sometimes offer it afterwards at a lower price as seen below)

Me paying $1799 for tire insurance makes me feel so ripped off after seeing that $999. I'm gambling on screwing up at least one rim though based on previous experiences in other cars.

I still don't get these insurance plans. We all know that the insurance companies make money on them in the long run, and I expect that all 991 owners can absorb the cost of a new tire or two without any significant impact to their finances.

Default Wheel and Tire insurance

P dealership is trying to sell me on Porsche multi-protection plan. Says it covers replacement of damage tires and/or wheels (including aftermarket if they meet MFG specs), and towing associated with damage; key replacement, paintless dent repair, window replacement and lost key replacement. Cost is $2150.
Seems like that makes sense but on my current car, there’s no way I’d have used enough to justify it. Granted, it’s not a Porsche but the OEM wheels are about the same cost. Are these wheels and tires really that susceptible to damage? PDF is attached.

from a dealership in Kentucky. If anyone has purchased for cheaper, love to know.

My experience at multiple P dealers over the years is that Porsche does not permit dealers to plug tires. Has anyone actually had a dealer plug a tire ?

Cost was less than $500.00, including labor, done at my local Porsche dealer. If I had paid $1,800 for the insurance on each car, I would have spent $7,200 on insurance to cover a $500.00 expense for the one tire.

These policies are like all insurance. The odds favor the insurance company, or they would be out of business. Regarding your points, 2, 3, 4, you can eliminate all of those if you use your Porsche dealer for tire replacement. I am assuming that is who you would use with your insurance. My dealer will match Tire Rack prices and usually has the tires in stock. If not, he can get them in 2-3 days.
This is my thinking and experience exactly. I have bought 5 new cars in the last 10 years. If I had bought the tire/wheel insurance, I would have paid out almost $9,000! In that time, I have had to buy 3 new tires due to flat's/road debris for about $1200. That's easy math for me. I don't understand when some people say, "I paid $1800 for the insurance, and I had a flat that would have cost me $500 to repair - I am glad I got the insurance!" - Actually, you would still need at least 2 more tires repaired before you are even break even, and 3 more to be ahead.

The dealers push these insurance packages for one reason - they make a ton of money on them as the statistics favor the dealer.

^Agreed.

Each driver should consider their personal history too. If you get a lot of flats/ curb rash you might be a better candidate for insurance. If you don't get a lot of flats or rash, not saying you won't, but you will probably come out ahead without the insurance.

I live in New York and drive about 5k miles a year. In the past three years I've had 8 tires replaced. It was always either a nail or a slow leak. I never had a blow out or any rim
Damage but the tire insurance has paid for itself.
