OK to start in 2nd gear?
With the 7MT is it bad for the engine to start the car in 2nd gear instead of 1st? This whole week I've been doing a lot of strenuous exercise outside in the heat and humidity and in the drive home today my legs felt like they were going to cramp and I was trying to minimize using the pedals as much as possible. Basically the whole drive at that point was between stopping and 40 mph, so I figured if I could start in 2nd I'd be good entire I came to a stop sign or light. Today I started in 1st, but in the future if this happens again am I better off starting in 2nd?

Don't lug the motor. What's one more shift?
Hydrate. Take 3 Ibuprofen every 6 hours.
From a roll, 2nd is ok.
Although, many automatic transmission start in 2nd gear in winter/snow mode to limit torque and wheel spin.

You will certainly wear the clutch a little more. Gears multiply torque, so at those very low RPMs you are not charging too much more stress on the engine, but you are definitely making problems for your clutch.

No, but I live in a very hot and humid area and I've been playing a lot of intense tennis and I sweat a lot. This week I overdid it and despite drinking a lot before and while playing I still cramped the minute walked into my house. Another time (with another car) both legs cramped up and I had to pull into a parking lot.
I don't want to damage the car so I'm glad I started in 1st today. I've heard of automatics starting in 2nd, which is why I asked

+1 What the other guys said about starting out in second.
Best thing I've used for hydration. Skratch Labs. Usually I just prefer water and don't like 'sports drinks'. This stuff works. Good for hangover prevention/recovery too
