I've had a TR 2016 R for about 4-5 months. Replacing a 06 Cayman S as my DD. It's an amazing car for the money. Great interior, great ride and good handling with the DCC. Built in Germany. If you load up a GTI with leather, PP package, Nav, etc the delta to the R is probably 4-6 K. You can find them for MSRP or a little under, and remember VW's markup is slightly less than Porsche. LOL

Exactly. Some people cut themselves with razor blades, others have 911s and drive something else around.

Great questions! I'm not so much worried about resale value. It's more of an issue in regards to cleaning the car as often as I would need to during the rainy season here. It's annoying when I spend an hour (therapeutic) hand washing the car, only to drive it the next day during a late afternoon downpour. Plus there's days where I don't like it roasting in the sun during the summer. I enjoy driving more than just one car hence the Macan S and the GTI. It's nice to mix things up.

GTI's make a great daily. Lots of space when you fold the seats down and sporty enough to have some fun.
I've driven the MK6 R, MK7 R, Scirocco R, MK6 GTI and MK7 GTI PP on the Phillip Island circuit.
The MK7 R is a properly fast car, but I'd probably buy a GTI because I find them a little more fun to drive. The R has too much grip.

So who punched the bumper in the Macan? Last VW GTI I had was a 1986. I enjoyed it until the gears ate a hole in the tranny case. I like each of my cars to be a different color. So when the wife and I go somewhere I just tell her we are taking the black car or the blue car and so on.

I am also a bit confused. GTIs are great cars, no doubt, but 911's are much better cars, really the perfect sports car for daily driving. Why would you not DD your 911? I enjoy my C2 the most in the rain when I can slide it around at sane speeds.
Back on the topic of the GTI, I've driven most generations (my dad has been leasing them for the last 10-15 years) and that lack of traction off the line (especially if it's wet) and turbo lag just kill all the fun for me.

sorry to resurrect this threat - I noticed that reliability wasn't addressed. Have you GTI owners (particularly 2012 and newer) had a lot of reliability issues?

The EA888 engine in the MK7 GTI/R had horrible reliability issues early in its life. The first generation suffered from oil consumption, carbon buildup, failing water pumps, and failing timing chain tensioners. The second generation fixed the oil consumption but the water pump, tensioner, and some carbon buildup issues remained. I believe that later on there were retrofits for improved water pumps and tensioners.
From what I understand, the 3rd generation EA888 in the MK7 GTI/R and B9 A4 has been significantly improved. I'm not hearing very many complaints about them.

Agreed! The few years I went without my 997 I was perfectly content with my 2012 GTI. I missed the 911 but the GTI still kept me excited about driving. I've always had DSG and I don't think I'll ever go back to a manual gearbox. The new APR software is ridiculous on these cars too. Vroom!
