Default Power Plant for the 991.2 GTS?

I am expecting that the 991.2 GTS will be announced late 2016 or early 2017 (correct me if I am off base).

Does anybody have any insight or speculation on the engine that it will have? I have not heard any rumors on the internet other than it will also be a turbo.

I have little motivation to order a S over a Base for an extra $14k since the engine displacement is the same and both have huge acceleration (I would not be able to tell the difference in acceleration between the S and the Base honestly). The PTV and larger front brakes will also be unnoticeable to me unless I took it to the track which I will not. The status of the S badge is irrelevant to me since I will delete it anyway.

Based on comments from PAG leadership, the 991.2 GTS will also be turbo so there is also no incentive to buy a GTS just for the NA nostalgia. Do you think the GTS will have a higher displacement? ...or is it gong to just be an increase in turbo boost that only adds more stress to a smaller displacement engine anyway.

Today I had a C2S and a C4 for test drive, for me there is so limited difference between the S and non-S, that its worth to save the money and put it into other options.

I think your timing may be off. 997 GTS came out in 2011MY, 6 MYs after 997 introduced. 991.1 GTS was MY 2015, 3 MYs into the 991 run. I'd be surprised if another GTS debuted sooner than 3 MYs into 991.2. But I could be wrong...

Exactly the kind of dialogue I wanted to facilitate! I understand the timeline that you mentioned. However, the 991.2 C4S, Targa and Turbo have already been announced. They need to annonce something in the fall or early Spring. I have also heard that the 991.2 will be short cycled and the 992 will come out earlier. But this is just my speculation based on internet rumors and real time roll outs.

992s already have mules running around. They are well on the development path.

I also get the sense it will be a short cycle for the 991.2... By the way I saw a 991.2 targa today...so they are out already. I think the GTS will be a turbo 3 liter for sure and I would think it will be MY 2019.. Possibly sooner, followed by the 992 in MY 2020...

If the 991.2 is a short cycle, don't be surprised if no GTS is offered. Historically, these "specials" have been ginned up towards the end of a model run when interest has waned. Take a bunch of options/configurations that are already in the parts hopper but not available to the regular Carrera, stick them on a Carrera, reduce price compared to ordering the options standalone but still make it 15% more than a base S model, and move some iron to people who bought the S early in the model run, or people who might otherwise have waited till the new replacement comes out.

If 991.2 only lasts 2 MYs, the GTS may not happen.

Yes. I am very familiar with the typical Porsche parts bin specials and product cycles. It's getting boring frankly. It happens too often these days. However, the 991.1 GTS offered more than just parts/options including a lot of beefed up engine components and another 30hp. If the 991.2 GTS offers only more turbo boost to the same 3.0 liter engine with the standard parts bin specials, I am not interested at all. Turbo boost costs Porsche 0 dollars unless they really need bigger turbines to drive boost.

If NA, spasm, SC, PSE....then let me contribute another $30k to Porsche's bottom line.

If history is consistent with the future, you will know for sure about GTS power when the 991.2S Powerkit option is offered, likely in 6 months or so.

It and a collection of super desirable really nice trim parts + wider rear fenders + Alcantara will be the GTS the year before the 992 arrives to forums full of alarm about the demise of the brand.

Yes, but the beefed up engine wasn't unique to the GTS, it was an option on the S.

I bet it will be the same 3.0 turbo engine in the S with the boost turned up producing exactly 450HP! Guess we shall see if I am correct one day!

You are correct and this is a great point. I didn't realize the power-kit option for the S came out before the GTS was offered. I'm looking forward to this option. The difference is that the S had a 3.8 over the base 3.4 and the GTS just added 30hp and beefed up components. If Porsche just adds turbo boost to the 3.0L, this will be disappointing .

450hp yes!. 3.0 Liter......not so much. More stress on a small displacement engine means lower longevity and reliability to me. I am going to put 200K miles + on my 911.

I had a 2002 996 Turbo with the X50 Powerkit. Same 3.6 as the regular Turbo, but $18,000 more! And they didn't just turn up the wick; the K16s got replaced with K24 turbos from the GT2; the GT2 intercoolers (much thicker) were used. And only then, after the hardware was beefed up to handle it, did they use GT2 software to turn up the power to (ironically, in light of this conversation) 450hp (regular Turbo was 415.)

Cheap tuners "turn the **** further;" Porsche (and quality tuners) replace lots of stuff before turning the **** further.

What specifically is a "parts bin special"?
