The dealer offered coverage for wheels and tires should the tire get a nail in it or if the wheel gets scraped or damaged. The plan covers both scenarios 100% and you can have unlimited claims. They want $2500 for it.

I'm curious what everybody else has for coverage. I am not one to buy these kinds of extra coverage the dealers offer. Mainly because I know the profit margins on them are outrageous for the dealer. They were pushing this wheel/tire plan pretty hard and weren't pushing others at all.

I've never owned a car with low profile tires like the Porsche. Do the rims normally get damaged because of the low profile tires? Is there a way to repair a low profile tire that gets a nail or is it pretty much a requirement to be replaced at that point?

Appreciate your thoughts on this.

roll the dice. the wheels are very well made, unlike say the BMW wheel insurance i thought was worth it.

Texas should have some really nice roads. If you were living in NY, NJ. PA I would say it's money well spent. BTW most wheel and tire insurance packages I've seen DO NOT cover curbing/scratching/paint finishes. Only breakage or bending.

And like some have already mentioned the wheels are tough and even if you have one break or bend one your car insurance should cover it already.

Some data points:

- The rear tires are over $400 each.
- Refinishing curb rash on a wheel is $150.

I took a bolt to the rear tire within my first month of ownership. NTB patched the tire to get me home, but badly gouged up the wheel in the process. I ended up buying a full set of PZeros and wheel refinishing to fix it all.

After installing the new tires, I took a screw to the rear tire literally on the way home from the shop and had to replace it again! (Tire Rack warranty covered that one.)

All I am saying is, during all of this I wish I had taken the tire "plan." Whether or not it's a good deal depends on the fine print and the terms. If a tire wears prematurely will they swap it, or does it only cover damage?

They do cover curb scratching. He specifically said that. I asked about a tire that wears prematurely. He said it doesn't cover that.

Houston has some pot holes that could engulf a SmartCar or 3. They are mostly around downtown and surrounding areas which I don't think would be part of a leisurely drive route.

Hrm. Tough call then. You probably won't curb the wheels yourself, but valets tend to do this sometimes. It would take a lot of curb rash to recoup the $2500.

On the other hand, a nontrivial number of flats would pay for itself.

Oh nice, what are the terms on the windshield coverage? Every single Porsche I've had ends up with pitting in the windshield. No exceptions.

Doesn't sound like anybody has experienced a higher volume of wheel/tire incidents that I have with my daily driver. I'm going to pass.

My wife has the worst kind of luck with tires. The Goodyear dealership practically gave her a reserved parking spot. Her wheels have to be magnetized for the number of nails she picks up.

First - read the fine print yourself, that salesman won't be anywhere in the picture when you have a claim to settle two years from now.

Second - $2500 seems way high, I got mine down to $1500 and read where others got it down to $1200. I got mine strictly for the wheels due to potholes, I think homeless people live in some of the large cavernous potholes we have in the DC area.

In the first 4000 miles I owned the 2013 991, I took a screw in the sidewall of my left rear tire TWICE. Each time I had to replace the tire. When I bought the GTS, the dealer did not have a wheel/tire policy in force. Two months later he had one but Porsche would not let him sell it to me retroactively. I have already had a nail through the tread of my right rear but had it patched. I do not track so it should be OK.
