Default Engine Clicking After Cold Start - Is this normal 991.1 C2?

I'm relatively new to the forum and the brand. Bought a gently used 991.1 10 months ago, had the first oil change about 6 months ago. Car has sat cold for the past 2 months. I noticed after the oil change that there was an engine clicking noise especially on startup. I want to say it goes away when the car has been driven for a bit, but I think its there even when not. Posted a video on youtube. Can someone tell me if this is potentially a bad problem? Or how to make it better if its just valve lifting (I googled this question).

Thank you,
Justin

Thank you,

Very normal. As it gets colder the oil flows a little slower. Boxer engines always make a little noise on starting. Even my 2016 Subaru 2.5 does it as well as the last 6 before. Enjoy your Porsche.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the reassurance. How long does yours typically do that for? I let the car sit for 10-15 mins and was still going, so I shut it down. Was just surprised to hear it. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

As has been noted before, it takes forever for the oil to warm up in these cars. Even when on the road, up to 10 to 15 minutes. Just sitting at idle, I can't even tell you how long it would take for it to get up to normal temperature.

Maybe a different oil viscosity was used during the oil change where you tell some of the slight difference with it warming up. Regardless, the engine sounds normal from what I hear at start up.

A different batch of gas or what not can cause some sound differences as well. These engines make quite a unique sound, which has grown on me greatly. Nothing else like Flat 6 NA engine sound

Who changed the oil on the car? Do you know what they used if not a dealer?

It seems that all direct fuel injection engines have a tick to them from their fuel injectors.

Don't let your car sit after turn on to warm up. Just go ahead and drive it.

stated in the manual as well.

Sounds normal to me. An engine, car in fact, always is louder in cold weather. These engines are full of overhead valves with not much metal between the hardware and the outside world. There are high pressure injectors injecting. Spark plugs sparking. These engines are just noisy. And the engine is rather exposed compared to say front engine cars.

Other DOHC engines are similarly noisy too but these are generally in the form of an upright cylinder layout and have some considerable sound deadening often bolted to the top of the engine.

The engine might have had its noise level increased some by the presence of several month old gasoline. While not badly stale it is not fresh and the engine can run a bit rougher because of it. This just increases the amount of noise the engine produces.

You need to drive the car more often and for more than just around the block.

Thanks for the reassurance and feedback. Unfortunately I'm in Wisconsin and there's a lot of snow on the ground, driving the car around isn't an option, but I don't like idling it either. As long as it's not something bad, I'm content.

Best,
Justin
