Autocar: The first road test of the 991.2 is now online
The first road test of the 991.2 is now online at Autocar and it is very, very positive with improvements all over…performance, ride, braking, steering, etc
Makes me very happy with my 4S order.

Good review... coming from a 2013 C4S and now driving a TT, winding up the engine and listening to the mechanical noises were the draw for me of the NA engine... I'm sure the improved torque is great and the other improvements are in line with natural evolution, but as I have posted before, once you've heard a 3.8L engine screaming at 8000 rpm... tough moving down to 3.0L TT... again, I'm sure its great and I would get one but no matter how you build it it's going to have a different "feel" with turbos, no matter how quick the boost comes on.

"The turbocharged unit happily accepts revs, but it is not quite as rabid in its action as we've become accustomed to with the naturally breathing engine."
... Is this an elegant way of saying turbo lag?
"Granted, its new engine lacks the characteristic induction hum and hard mechanical edge at certain points within the rev range that made the old naturally aspirated unit so invigorating. But what it loses in outright aural qualities, the turbocharged mill more than makes up for with sheer ease of driveability and accessibility of its performance."
... Doesn't this seem like a watered down fluff review??

"The lift in performance is accompanied by a significant improvement in fuel economy. Porsche claims combined cycle consumption of 36.7mpg for the new 911 Carrera S with the PDK gearbox a boost of 4.2mpg. Emissions of CO2 have also fallen from an earlier 205g/km to a very impressive 174g/km."
Emissions and CO2? seems like the VW group has a good reputation for that.

I suspect, as seems to happen with each new model, the 991.2 will be an improvement in a lot of ways, but some people will still prefer the previous one (see water cooling, electric steering etc.). I definitely want to have a go in one and decide for myself. My instinct, having driven a Turbo S, is that I prefer normal induction, but I'm staying open minded till I've tried the 991.2. It certainly sounds like it's good from this piece.

It will be a nice car no doubt. A lot of good things come out of progress most of the time. Will drive it when it comes out to see what it's like in person.
Just not the direction I want to go in personally. I can understand the appeal it would have to most buyers.

Yes, but Turbo engines lack character. Period. AMG tries hard but it's not close to good NA engines. Will they make more power? Definitely. I've owned few turbo cars, latest being a 15 F10 M5.
All turbo engines have lag, they all seem to have uneven throttle. They are all lower compression than NA engines. Not to mention the heat issues all FI engines have to deal with.
Best NA engined vehicles I've driven/owned are E46 M3, E92 M3, SRT Viper, Cayman S, 911 GTS, 6.2L C63/E63.

More Power equals more Speed equals more Status equals hotter Chicks, la di da !
I like the free revving nature of NA engines and working the car on the street a bit in the higher revs and listening to the mechanical sounds. Im sure the the new one will be fantastic as well but likely not my cup of tea.

I am sure that the new 991.2 will be faster than the 991.1 and maybe even better overall. As what newer alterations from previous models usually are. There is no argument from that one. But the aural sensation you get from a NA engine plus the linearity of the response are the reasons why I decided on getting a 2016 GTS MT. Initially I was dead set on the 991.2 C2S but changed my mind on the last minute. Will I eventually change my mind, maybe.

I have a feeling that the new Turbos when they come will have much more features than usual (probably taken lot from 918; they already took the steering wheel from it for the new Carreras).
If Ferrari can replicate NA sound etc features combined with Turbo engine for California T, I am sure Porsche could do the same (if not better). In the mentioned review (which is excellent), the author didn't get to review the PSE.

That doesn't indicate turbo lag to me. That indicates to me that the engine isn't as free-revving as the previous motor.

I had no doubt the car would be a solid performer and an improvement on the previous car. If only they hadn't chosen to beat it with an ugly stick at both ends I'd be more enthused. As I've said all along though, I'm sure it will sell really well. Bangle didn't destroy BMW.
