What's Your Oil Level Dipstick?
Third oil change today, this one at 7,150 mi. (reason for the change is I moved to Mobil 1 5w50).
Changed out filter also, filled with 7.92 quarts and after two drives, oil level is three bars below the max level. This no dipstick business makes me nuts. My question is, do the proscribed 7.92 quarts just get get you to one bar into the green or is it supposed to get you closer to the max level? 3 bars below max is about another quart of oil, that's a big difference and I certainly do not want to over fill.
What gives?
Thanks. Duke

How long did you let your oil drain? I got mine up to operating temperature and let it drain for about an hour. I filled it with 8 quarts of M1 0W-40 and ended up being 1-2 bars into the green. Sometimes the measurement reads 1 and other times it reads 2. It's probably right on the edge between the two.

8 quarts brings me about 1 bar from the full line.

After every drive, add 200 ml of oil. Recheck your level. Rinse & repeat. Stop adding oil till you get the reading you want. I like mine at the full mark. Even one bar below, I have sleepless nights.

LV, I'm with you on that one! What adds to my disquiet is wondering if the electronic, "Jetson's" dipstick is no more precise than our 194F h2o temp gage. Thanks for your help with the oil btw. D

And the electronic oil dipstick can easily read 200 ml. So that's easily within 2%. 200/9,000= 1.8%.

This is what happens at the end of a technology's life cycle. You are seeing the end of the internal combustion engine. The manufacturer isn't pushing ownership, it is pushing rental cars with zero maintanence. Drive it for three years and turn it back in. Low miles, zero oil changes, keep your head and your hands out of the engine bay. One world government combined with global corporations will tell you what you can drive and how long you can keep it. Go to an electric go kart track and see how they control the speeds of the cars and how many laps before they need a rapid recharge. This is what the Tesla and the new e Porsches and VWs and Toyotas and Volts are all about. You won't own, you won't control it, it will be no different than a toaster or a tv.
