payment
Hi, I am taking delivery of my new 991 shortly. Is it customary to hand over check 2 days before for full payment? Dealer has to register the new car. It seems safer to pay upon delivery to me. Any suggestions?

I've never paid in advance with a personal check. The day of delivery, I write the check, and drive away.

Are they registering your car for you as a favor?
For the few times I've bought a car out of the state I lived it was up to me to pay the sales tax and register and that's a few weeks after the sale so the paper work could be processed.

certified check on date of pick up
temporary registration on day of pick up with the real one coming by mail about 3 weeks later
all other car purchases were check on date of pick up, never before pick up date

Yup, why would you give them a check before checking over the car in the first place? Talking about toothbrush and comb checking over, take a good hour before you hand over the check to give them the idea you are a hardass. Even if you aren't. Can give you leverage in the future.

ditto what Porsche_nuts said + only after full visual inspection and test drive.

When buying and shipping a car from out of State, nobody is going to ship the car to you without payment in advance. Common practice for them to want payment up front, regardless whether you are paying the registration and sales tax directly or they're handling all that. A dealer would be a fool to do all the paperwork, prep and ship the car to you without the cash in hand. Too many flakes out there and too big a risk for them. I negotiated with three out of state dealers and they all said, cash in hand before they would do the paperwork and begin the process of shipping the car to me. I did get a guarantee from them in writing the car was flawless and subject to inspection by me though.

Typically personal checques require several days to clear. The dealer does not actually have the money till the check clears. On a variety of different manufacturers, we've paid with cashier's or certified check the day of delivery.

I purchased my 991 from an out of state dealer. It was delivered to my driveway. Check upon delivery, they didn't even rehire certified or cashiers check.
