Mine just did it Friday.

Officially, they are not supposed to do it.

Because on the rare chance you suffered a catastrophic tire failure and crashed the vehicle due to that repaired tire failure, their liability would be huge. A dealer is held to a much higher standard than an independent shop.

Also, a pretty good read here:

Just found a nail in my rear tire (PZeros). :-( Not currently leaking air. Have 3K miles on them. Current tread depth on rears about 7/32.

Haven't tracked the car yet but would expect 2-3 track days this year.

So I guess I have the following options:
1) Repair and live with repaired tire until time for new tires.
2) Replace the one rear tire but have different tread depths
3) Replace both rears (probably would repair for now until just before first track day)

Opinions???

I have repaired a similar puncture in a P0 with a tire off, inside patch and plug and got about 7k miles afterwards with no problem.

Taking the tire off will allow you be certain that the nail has not done structural damage to a belt.

My tire guy advised that it was safe for tracking, but I didnt so cant tell anything about htat.

I've had nails in the tread patched at the dealership too, they just won't do it when it's in the sidewall.

Years ago, I used to do some work where I dealt with performance tires, including Michelin. As already mentioned, repairing a tire will void the manufacturer's speed rating. Additionally, the problem with the sidewall being repaired isn't actually the G-forces it incurs during turning, it results from the basic design of the radial tire which causes the sidewall area of the tire to flex significantly, even when rolling in a straight line. As a result, that area of the tire generates the greatest heat even under normal driving conditions. That flexing may also cause a belt separation inside the tire once the structure of the tire has been compromised, or may cause the patch/plug to fail when repaired.

That said, patches/plugs have gotten better over time and some shops have had very good success repairing the "tread area" of a tire. Hope this helps.

I'd go option 1 with a rim-off internal patch. If it was sidewall damage, then replace.

Option #3. And never, never track a patched tire.

Pull it out and then go from there.

It could be very short with no interior tire damage.

Dwishner, a new rear tire is 9/32. So you are fine just replacing one tire.

Worst case, you can order a shaved tire from the Tire Rack to match your remaining tire.

Regardless, patch and plug the tire, and keep as an emergency spare.

I had a nail in the rear tire tread with 4k miles on my car, I would not plug it. I bought a new tire, also had to buy all the tools to remove the center lock wheel.

I had a nail in one of rear tires of my 991S last summer and I ended up replacing two rear tires. Since then I sold my 991 and I happen to still have the tire that was good (with under 7k easy miles on it, so plenty of tread left). If anyone wants a spare rear PZero, send me a PM.
