Default Can't take car to Canada?

Is it true that you can't take a US-leased car to Canada for a weekend?

Hope not. I've taken mine to Montreal for a weekend and plan to do so again.

I'd be more worried about having insurance coverage.

Clever marketing and PR efforts to the contrary, Canada is an evil place full of criminals and reprobates. Porsche knows this and is protecting you.

This is true for rental cars. So, I guess same restrictions apply for leased cars.

Read your lease agreement to confirm. Sounds crazy. I've rented from Budget, Dollar, and U-Haul and driven across the border after having let the rental company know. Apparently there is some sort of insurance issue, and I have been required to buy additional insurance from the rental Company. In the past, we have had leased vehicles from Honda that we drove into Canada with no problem.

Just read the fine print on my lease agreement. Learned two things. 1) I agreed not to remove the vehicle from the United States. 2) I agreed not to allow anyone other than me and my spouse to operate the vehicle.

Bummer! I guess that means you have to drive it into the service bay yourself. If the dealer objects, show them the lease.

The language likely protects PFS in case of insurance claims (diminished value?). How is a restriction enforceable if you drive your car to Canada or let your neighbor drive it? I don't recall any language for relief provided to PFS if you violate the lease contract in either instance - is there even any. So, what can they do, unilaterally terminate your lease - in which case, anyone wanting out of their lease need only have a friend drive their car. No, it is just so they can protect their asset and go after you as being in violation of the contract if anything untoward happens in that dreadfully dangerous Great White North.

do people at the border actually ask for document regarding to the car? Last time I drove the car across the border was 20 years ago (to Toronto) and I don't remember they asked for anything. So I guess you drive there at your own risk (insurance coverage) that kind of thing.

Funny about the rental cars -- I often go backpacking in northern Montana and will pick up a rental car in Kalispell. It's so close to the border, and lots of people no doubt fly there to go into the sourther Canadian Rockies that you'd think the rental agency would mention this or something. I guess it is probably in the rental documents somewhere, but it's never been called out to me, highlighted, or in anyway made more conspicuous than any of the other 6-point-font boilerplate in the lengthy contract.

Consequently, I have sinned, unwittingly. I have repeatedly driven across the border into Alberta, and into BC, with a US-based Thrifty or Avis car. I feel very dirty right now.
