PCM Software Version Update

PCM Software Version Update
I am thinking about putting a backup camera in and was told I need to first update my 2112.5's PCM software from ver 3.4 to 4.0 (press Source and Info to see the current version). Is there a way to download the new version, burn to a CD and do it myself or is this a dealer only affair? Cost? Anyone have an idea what changes come with 4.0 beside making it NAV TEC camera compatible?

I have. 2012.5 991s and recently updated the SW and it isn't into the 4.x series. I was told what I have is the latest for my car (original sale was April 2012). I'd be interested to learn if the early 991s support 4.x since my dealer is one of five flagship dealers in the U.S. And I didn't question what they told me.

Is there a central place to determine current SWV by VIN?

That's a great call, we need a thread to cover software versions by manufacturing date, updates, and version differences. Anybody who has knowledge or access to such knowledge please help. I'm sure a lot of Rennlisters would appreciate.

I'm at 4.63...had the car in to the dealer in Germany Feb 2015 to load Euro maps when I brough the car over from the US. Will wait to early next year when they offer the Euro map update and online services upgrade...about 320 Euro or so. Talked to the service advisor and he said to wait until early next year and pay for the update once instead of going from 4.63 to 4.75 and then again in Jan/Feb for map updates/online services add.
Would sure be nice to have a website that detailed the current software versions and what each one does to decide if it is worth updating.
I think software updates should be free. I get having to pay for new map and POI data, but software upgrades should be free for the life of the car.

There is a version beyond 4.75 which I am having loaded in two weeks when I have the oil changed. Apparently, it cures spontaneous shut-down of the PCM; a problem I do not have.

Anyone out there paying for software updates not linked to a map update?

I just got back from the dealer today. They updated from 4.63 to 4.75 for free. There will be an update in early 2016 with new maps and the ability to add online services for real-time traffic in Europe. I plan on doing that. Will run about 350 Euro.
