Default Correcting Headlight Swirls

The headlight covers are very soft are easily scratched. How does one correct swirls and other scratches, same polish as for body paint? What about compounding? Is it ok to use nanoskin autoscrub on the exterior plastics?

Thanks.

Duke, be careful. Our headlights have a factory coating on them.

might be worth calling dealership and seeing if they have any that are about to be binned that you could test out on?

Some clear bra installers may have experience with the 991 headlights and factory coating, and can safely & properly apply a film to hide/diminish the swirls you're seeing. There are some good posts on the 991 GT3 Forum about this headlight issue, film, and factory coating problem.

I think I read somewhere that you should not be using anything but water on the headlight covers, no chemicals, windex, etc.

Two parallel lines from Sunday's cleaning. Bug carcasses, I think. Sonofa! No way to get them out?

Duke, I don't know.

But I can offer some advice going forward. I deal with dead bug carcasses all the time, since I don't wash my car more than once a month or every 6 weeks. If it weren't for bugs, my car is pretty clean.

The key is a good base wax/sealant like RejeX or something like OptiCoat Pro. The other key is dwell time with a solution of water and car wash soap to soften and pre"melt" the bugs. I mix a pretty strong solution of soap & water in a good quality sprayer. I use the whole bottle up. Spraying multiple times while I wash other parts of the car first.

The water soap solution breaks down the bugs, and they pretty much slide right off when washing.

In past years I've tried Bug Barricade from Griots. Works very well. Leaves a slight haze, but after your first drive and a few dead bugs, doesn't really matter. But now that I have OptiCoat, I don't see the need for the BB.

I don't like using Bug Removers. They work great, but strip the wax/sealant away.

Good luck.

Thanks LV. Have not considered OC until now. You did not have the headlights coated did you?

Also, did you do a paint correction before OC? I have a number of chips already and I have a lot of contaminants on the paint surface despite claying.

I think my LED's were OptiCoated when the car was done.

Full paint correction is key & critical when doing just about any high-end sealant system. Especially with the nano coatings like OptiCoat Pro (I hear there is an OC Pro Plus now....you should research to confirm). It's all about the prep work.

Order some Dr. Color Chip for the paint chips. Practice on your wife's car first. Give the kit to your detailer when you have the car professionally done.
