I was going through my old collection and was like, huh, I wonder what this will sound like in the car. It sounds soooo much better than MP3s. Better even than FM radio. It was like a revelation. I forgot how much the rush for convenience has impacted quality. It's still just being played through the stock BOSE system in the car, but much better than MP3s.
We took DDD classical CDs to play in cars side by side Bose v Bermester; it was a costly listen since it was obvious to my wife (and even me) we had to get the Burmester since we have 100s of CDs. The difference was astounding but both systems were clearly better than satellite or iPod.
MP3 sound OK at 320 when self ripped.
I had a lot of problems with comercially ripped MP3.
Even at 320 the comercially ripped stuff sounds awfull.
Now I always buy the CD and rip myself.

Constant Bit Rate vs Variable Bit Rate. CBR vs VBR is slicing it pretty thin, when what's really needed is to get away from all forms of compression in the first place. Not just the worst lossy data compression either but the equally bad dynamic compression so often used by recording studios. All these are anathema to good sound.
Ripping is converting files, in this case music from CD to whatever digital file you choose. Apple lossless is one of the better known common methods but there are lots out there.
My standard, vinyl, is of course above all that, though impractical in a Porsche! The people who think MP3's are bad should hear an LP some time. Not so much to learn just how awful even what passes for good digital is, but to get a better understanding of what good digital is supposed to sound like!
My 2002 Turbo has the top Bose system that was on offer then. I know the favorite pastime of all internet audio buffs is to rip Bose systems, but this car came with a Bose demo CD and honestly, sitting in the car with the motor off and windows up and that CD in there is the best sound I've ever heard. It makes my heart very happy that I don't have finely-tuned enough ears to think THAT sounds like garbage (or to tell myself it does because the internet says so.)
But there's something done to that CD -- I even have, coincidentally, a Gene Harris CD with one of the same recordings that's on the Bose CD! What are the odds, since I've never even heard of any of the other songs or artists. But the original CD I own doesn't sound as good as the Bose version. Maybe they just pushed the bass and treble settings or something, but it is definitely a "bigger" sound.
Not to thread jack but have you folks tried aharadio?
I was having trouble with my entry/drive system so I had to break out the manual and came across the aharadio stuff.
I just downloaded the app last night, so just getting started using, but it uses your phones internet connection to do a lot more then just play music through the head unit.
