Different, yes. Improved? Not so much. Same problem with unrepresentative colors, and having to go 3D to see your changes. Only now 3D is thumbnail size with fullscreen feature hidden. 3D also looks a little lower-rez. At least on Safari. I know colors are hard, even to get right with a photograph. But you'd think they can get closer than this.
It seems to be buggier than the old version -- selected options stop appearing in the 3D view, unity player has trouble reloading if you exit (or just exit 3D) and go back, and you have to manually kill the Unity process -- and still has the bugs of the old version -- for example, when configuring a Panamera Turbo S, if you select the Burmester stereo while in 2D mode, the 3D mode won't load at all. (This doesn't happen with other models.) They did seem to fix the glitch of properly displaying the Yachting Mahogany interior trim in the Cayenne, where part of the inlay was missing. The color differences between the configurator and real life are pretty egregious. Hiding the Full Screen view in a pop-up menu is also a bad choice for a UI with that much open space. And, the Full Screen view is not as good as it used to be, at least on a large screen.
I didn't notice the thumbnail size issue, the default size is larger than the previous default (on a 27" screen, at least). Being able to go back and forth between option groupings (interior, exterior, etc.) more easily is nice, although, a little clunky still (or maybe I just don't love some of the UI choices there). Overall it's somewhat of an improvement, but they need to do the work to squash the bugs, and give more attention to details like colors. Also, they need to ditch the plugins. Just hire a decent HTML5 developer and make it so it will run in 3D on an iPad. (I haven't tried that yet, but I'm assuming they didn't develop a separate tablet mode.)
It looks like they're going thru a series of changes - the way the interior options are displayed, radio buttons for the transmission options.
The thumbnail issue may be browser based. It happens to me with firefox but not with ie. And the 3D load has always been an issue, some days worse, some days better. But when it works right, Porsche's configurator is the best out there. It almost has to be, since it would be impossible to understand all the options without the 3D rendering.
One nice thing that I noticed is the ability to see deviating leather and stitching options that were added with Panamera and Cayenne facelifts. Hopefully those options will migrate to the 911 configurator next year. It's really very good.
