The Curves of Porsche (sensual)
Couple of pals and I were discussing the iconic 911 shape, and how the reason it has endured for 50 years is because its downright sexual in the design of the sheet metal....its shaped like a woman's body not in just one place, but all over the car. Guys get aroused by a 911's shape and don't even know why so we took a few photos to show it. Here's one I took in the parking lot of my left front fender on my 991. Were I better at Photoshop (can't get that Magnetic Lasso to work right) I could eliminate the concrete from the shot. Reflections of the building front add to the photo on the Agate Gray color, I think.
Anyways, this is what Jennifer Lopez would look like if she were a car....lol. Anyone else have shots of the curves of their 911 that mimic a woman's shape?

Seriously though, there was an interview with Ferry (I think) on this very subject. Of course being German he put it in straightforward terms of engineering and science (if you can call psychology a science). His point was that when you look at something straight and flat, or with edges, your eye is drawn to the edges, you see what's there. It looks maybe a little different when lighting or perspective changes, but it doesn't take long before you know what's what. At that point it becomes boring.
With curves however there is always something different waiting just over the curve. The pic drcollie posted is borderline mesmerizing. You could look at it all day. But the black and white curve photo-shopped above is boring in a millisecond. You can tell right off its flat. Ferry on the other hand knew from the beginning those curves are not only aerodynamic, they are also what will hold our attention and admiration over the years.
Of course like so many other things that great man made words always seem to fall short of explaining why they are so great and enduring.
Michael Mauer incidentally is very much in the same mold. He deserves great credit as the designer who was able to maintain the 991's link with its heritage even as he raised the bar to a whole new level.

I don't know. The line of 911 to me is more of a cute and friendly one. It is never sensual. It still has a similarity with the cute VW Beetle. This cuteness is, I think, why we don't easily become tired of its design. By contrast, the design of Ferrari is sensual, if we ever try to find a tinge of sensuality in the design of cars.
