Default Winter wheel question

Thinking of getting a dedicated set of wheels for winter driving.
What size wheel would one use for winter tires front and back.?
My 50th has 20 inch wheels. For winter driving and potholes, can one swap out to smaller non-low profile wheels?
Basically, what should I get wheel and tire-wise for northeast winter driving? Potholes are an issue.

A true winter setup will be higher profile tires on smaller diameter wheels the same or narrower width. If you will be driving in deep water, slush or snow then you'll really appreciate the way a less wide tire cuts through the crap and splashes less of it on the car. Greater traction, fewer chips. Call or go on-line to the Tire Rack. That's what I always do.

So I ordered a set of 20" wheel/tires with TPMS from my Porsche dealer. I negotiated them down to $5k. The reason why I picked the 20s rather than the 19s is that in general the 20s come with Michelin alpin PA4's while the 19s have come shod with Pirelli sotto-zero IIs. I have gathered that perhaps the michelins may be better. I'm sure either would be just fine.

Remember -- negotiate with your parts guy if you buy straight from Porsche. He beat the Suncoast price by quite a bit. $250 over their invoice I believe.

nothing smaller than a 19 will clear the brakes, and not even all of those. I never used tire rack, but i do know Wheel Enhancements guys are very knowledgeable.

I got a set of 19" Carrera wheels and Pirelli Sottozero winter tires from my local Porsche dealer. Same wheel that fjpdds posted above.

I got these 19" BBS wheels from Tire Rack. In the summer I use them as track wheels. I'll change over to winter tires when it gets cold enough.

I used 20" Carrera S rims with Pilot PA4s. I found the Michelin Pilots to be an excellent winter tire. I never had a problem with traction; you'll have issues with ground clearance well before you run into a grip issue.

Are aftermarket wheels ok to use if car is leased? Also, I have the 50th which has wider than normal rear wheels. For winter you would use 11 inch wheels with no issues?

Hi Grunty. I'm thinking about the same thing with my 911-50. Last winter I had a Cayman S and ran 18" wheels which were 1" smaller than the summers, and that worked well. I also had the Pilot Alpin 4s which were excellent and will get them again. My only issue really is which design? Fuchs now make 19" wheels that are TUV approved for the 991, and the 997 Sport Classic wheels are 19s and a bit wider, both I think would look good on an Anniversary, although neither would be as cheap as a package from an OPC or Suncoast.

Oh yes, I'm sure your lease company will be fine especially as you won't be telling them that you are putting less miles on their wheels, and narrower wheels are fine so long as you don't expect as much grip in the snow and slush.

Those are the same exact wheels I bought for my winter set-up. Good choice!

Had to buy the tires from Discount Tire because TireRack did not have the Michelin Alpin PA4's in 19 inches. - I put these wheels and tires up for sale in the "for sale" forum because they don't fit my TT.

LOL, the one on the right is my bad weather winter set-up as well, though I do outfit my car with winter wheels/ tires to maintain optimal cold weather performance (even in dry conditions) and in case I do get stuck in a bit of snow or freezing rain.
