2014 Cayman S/GTS vs 2012 Carrera S
So my first car was the 2013 FRS and although I love the car for all that it is, I am left wanting more. I've been heavily tracking/autocrossing the car for almost 2 years now and although I have a blast through the turns, the straight's just leave me sad. That coupled with a few raises and I've decided its time to buy my dream car.
I've always been a huge fan of the 911, but the 2014 911 GT3 would dip too far into my savings/month (Damn you Canadian Porsche markup).
So now I'm trying to decide between a a fully performance optioned 2014 Cayman S (or GTS) PDK and a 2012 991 911 S. Please chime in with your opinions, and feel free to add to my list below.
2012 911
Pros:
- Faster
- 2 extra seats
Cons:
- Used
2014 Cayman S/GTS
Pros:
- Improved PDK
- Lightweight
- Mid-engine (sound and weight distribution)
- Longer warranty
- New car feeling
Cons:
- More depreciation
Thanks in advance!!

I think it will prove challenging to obtain a Cayman GTS allocation.

GTS Allocation
Apparently I would be getting one of the 2015 versions in September/October.
The difference between the S and GTS with the same options seems to simply be the 15HP, which is negligible. Also I think my dealership is willing to give me a deal on the very well optioned S they have in stock to avoid having me order the 2015 version. I don't know if I can miss a whole track season though for 15HP and a tag? But maybe waiting 3 months is worth it when you consider how long I'll own the car.

If the 991S is a CPO, I'd go with that. Otherwise, I'd have to test drive a Cayman GTS before I made my choice. The 991S is a great car in the right hands, but for the average guy who hasn't attended any performance driving schools and doesn't track his car, it's probably a waste of money. The Cayman GTS should have enough performance to keep almost anyone entertained. Of course the ultimate street/ track car is a GT3. From what I can determine of your budget, you would have to look at a late model 997.

What a coincidence, I was watching an old video of TopGear a couple of days ago with James May taking the 911 Sports Classic and a Boxter for a spin and comparing the two, neither car is a exact match but should still find it interesting.

I've attended 2, soon to be 3 driving schools, obtained my novice race license and gone to several lapping days. I can only see myself falling deeper and deeper into the world of motorsports. Given this knowledge, I can't decide if I will outgrow the cayman s too fast.
Any other track junkies with a Cayman S care to comment?

Well I walked away from a Cayman I had on order to pick up a 991. The HP difference is very noticeable and I like learning how to use the 911 for aft balance to my advantage on the track.
I would also question how much better the new Cayman PDK is then the 2012 991. My understanding is the big jump up was from the 997 to the 991 and any improvements to the PDK after 2012.2 are fairly small.

D,
I'm not sure whether you had a finger slip when comparing HP, but as far as i'm aware the difference between the 991S and the GTS is not 15HP. The 991S is 400HP vs the GTS 340HP. Torque is 325 vs 280 respectively. 60HP difference and 45Tq.
Enjoy your decision. My advice; don't do anything until you've driven both.
Cheers.

In the US, you can build a highly optioned Cayman GTS for under $100K on the Configurator. That's around the base price of a 991S with no options.
