Default Proposed Squeaky Brake Fix

For you techincal gurus, my brake squeal is getting pretty nasty. It does make the car sound like a race car, but I'm not to excited about squeaking up to every single stop sign and stop light.

It's always been my understand that the noise comes from the pad vibrating in place and doesn't actually have much to do with the pad touching the rotor. So couldn't I just pull the pads out and add some of the red anti-squeak stuff I have in a tube in my cabinet to the back of the pad? Do you think that would solve the problem?

I really don't want to get the "comfort" pads that Porsche offers. I'd rather have squeaky brakes than inferior stopping power.

PCCB or steel rotors?

you might want to try replacing the (OEM) anti-vibration pads between the pistons and the pads ...

PCCBs are usually worse than steels, it tends to happen when they are cold, and when 'threshold' braking (like when you pull up at the lights or a stop sign).

I would try replacing the anti-vibe plates 1st; maybe a good time to flush brake fluid also?

Not going to hurt and might help. Worst case scenario will give you a few hours of quality time with your car. It's a win-win scenario.

Don't forget to buy new caliper bolts. There was a post a couple weeks back about this. About $5 each.

While you're at it, get all mating parts good and clean, and scuff the pads up with a wire brush, coarse sandpaper, anything to rough them up. Unless you go overboard, one or two good stops will have them bedded back in again- but at a slightly different set. Because you're right about the cause, these things alone will often shift things around just enough to do the trick.
