For 991 owners who previously had a 997

I came from a 997.1 and I don't think the 991 is "much" faster; however, it is a big leap in evolution in almost every other way. Its roomier, its more refined, its a heck of a lot more comfortable (no back aches after a four hour drive). I love it.

Wasn't aware that the 997.2 was different I had a 2007 (997.1?) C4S 6MT and now have a 991 C2S 7MT. Low end torque is much better. You can compare the Porsche graphs in the sales aids and they show about this difference too so it is not just feel. I needed to wind up the 997 to higher revs to get the low end torque feel I wanted. My old M3 and the 991 feel similar low end but the 997 was just missing for me.
Just my two cents.

I sold my 997 turbo when I got my 991C2S. A much better car.

Zelig, the 997.1 is very different than the 997.2. The 997.2 engine is much more similar to the 991 with direct fuel injection. Going from 997.1 to 991 is a large leap. From 997.2 the engine is not so much a leap but a short hop. It's the chassis that's the big leap. I can't comment on the tranny because mine was a PDK and after 5 years with the PDK I would never go back to a MT so i've ordered another PDK. You will probably have your 991 a long time because I suspect this will be the last iteration of a MT in a 911. I'll bet lots that the 992 in 2017 will be PDK only.

I've been daily driving 911s for 23 years now (everything from a 911SC to a 930 to numerous 993s to 996s and a 997)... I traded my 2006 997 for a 2012 991 base. As I was driving the 997 up to the dealer in July to do the trade -- about a 45 mile drive on a beautiful day, top down -- I was having some serious pangs about how good the 997 is. Five minutes into the drive home in the 991 I forgot all about the 997 ... it's a completely transformed car. I remember thinking, I'm sure they can keep making this car even faster as it evolves, but I can't see how they can make it any better than it is. I would not think twice about it.
Even my friend who has worked for Porsche for decades now and was a Porsche master tech before he signed on with PCNA told me, just get the 991 and don't look back.

I would be interested to know specifically what people who have owned both cars in MT guise think about the transmissions in each. The talking heads lamented the 7spd in the 991 but you sure don't get the sense listening to owners that it is anything but outstanding.

The 991 MT is smoother. thats all i can say. But there was nothing wrong IMO in the 997 MT

Had a 997.2 c4s cab PDK and now have a 991 C4S cab PDK. The 997 was a driver's car in IMHO it did punish bad decisions but rewarded with a lot of feel. 991 is significantly faster in the PDK but in MT the margins are smaller. The PDK in sport plus in the 991 is violent, it was love at first shift LOL launch control is also much improved. Anything prior to 997.2, is going to be no contest when you conduct the seat of the pants test. I love every generation of 911 and glad to say, they've given me a reason to buy the 991 and appreciate that decision everyone time I get in the car.

I have owned various 911's since 1987. I think they were all wonderful cars, but the 997.2 was my least favorite. My complaint was it was too damn noisy. While driving on a concrete surface the interior noise was way too loud. I bought the car as a retirement gift to myself hoping to do some "grand touring". One trip to Philly from southern Md. nixed that idea. But for the interior noise, I might still have it. I went back to another 95 '993, a car that has a special place in my heart. It was a wonderful car but I sured missed all the power that 997 had. So I sold the 993 and got a 97' 993tt. It was a very low mile car and I didn't want to use it as a dd so I bought the 991C2S Cab, a highly optioned car with PDK. It is somewhat faster than the 997.2, but exploring the difference on public roads is both dangerous and stupid. What it is is a much more refined car that is superior to the 997.2 in any way that I can think to compare. My problem is that I sold my 993tt to chase down a 356 Speedster. I have come to the conclusion that a 356 Speedster is not in my future, but another 993tt for sure is. I love my 991 and will keep it for whatever years remain for me (I'm an old fart) but I miss the 993tt. It's one of those things that graphs and numbers can't explain. Certainly a 991S has superior graphs and numbers to a 16 year old Porsche. If I had to pick one or the other, as I once did, I would still pick the 991S, but a 993tt is the ultimate second car to my mind. This is all to say that every 911 from its introduction 50 yrs. ago, to the latest 991 has its own pluses and minuses. It all depends on you.

Boy I am really enjoying these responses. I am surprised how many went from 997.1 to 997.2 to 991. It makes the thought of me going from an 05 997.1 to a 14 991 not seem so outrageous. When I drove the 14 C2 base it felt about as fast as my 05 S but much more buttoned down and a far better chassis.
