Add to that the simple fact that the writers need something to write about so have to split the hairs that may or may not matter to anyone who actually lives with the cars. The 991 bashing- "e-steering, PDK, softer suspension, blah blah" was exaggerated when the cars first appeared. As soon as people had their own and more road tests started appearing, and it became obvious how good the car was, magazine tester backtracking set in. Combine that with all the variations, and much ado's about 10th of seconds in non-comparable test conditions. Happens with every new 911. Happening with the GT3 now. It is hard to go wrong with 911s.

Had a 997 4S daily driver but didn't like the handling. Traded it for an M3 but the clutch was awful due to a damper valve. Just got my 991 2S and it is perfect. I live in the Northeast US. Also the extra trunk space is a plus too. I can fit a rolling laptop bag and other stuff now. Used to use my backseat for storage.
FYI, when I ordered my 997 4S you also got better brakes for the extra money but now they are standard in the 2S. For 7K you just get AWD in the 991.

I just drove my 2S (not intentionally) through a major northeast rain storm over twisty, wet leaf, covered back roads. The 991 2S handled this like a champ. The tires are barely broken in (150 miles) and no sliding at all. I didn't notice a difference compared to my 997 4S with respect to road holding. Having a rear engine over the drive wheels just the way Ferry Porsche designed it for the 356 and in their VWs worked great.
