Lol! In NY? Must have caught him on a good day! Did you get away with no ticket for both speeding and no front plate?

I haven't gotten a ticket in 10 years. Even driving a way too low supercharged e92 M3 with a cat-less exhaust that was borderline obnoxiously loud.

I actually don't speed that much, but I was clocked passing two gravel trucks going 130 in a 55 mph zone. I heard stone chips hitting my car, and in panic I stomped on the gas. Well, between the two gravel trucks (on the right side, very unusual) was a trooper. I thought I'd poop my pants when he pulled out. Instead of letting you simmer for a couple of minutes he pulled me over right away. I told him why I was speeding, and he even inspected the hood - actually found two little chips (I think I had them before though), and he came back telling me that he'll give me the biggest break of the year, he also told me that I hold the record of the year. I was very, very grateful.

I was delighted when I took delivery in June '12, that the salesman anticipated I may not like the front plate mounted. Those holes drilled into the bumper was not a good solution.

Paid the price not 2 weeks later when I was pulled over for no front plate. The RCMP officer wasn't interested in excuses and promptly issued a ticket.

This forced me to come up with a quick solution. Being a composites specialist, I layed up a carbon fiber one piece mount molded in place in the auxiliary cooler space. Practiced on an old plate bending the top and bottom as you only get one shot to get it right. Fits so well all that holds it in place are 2 small plastic push in rivets positioned on the top underside and out of view.

I went back to the local police station to show the officer that the repairs had been complete and if he would be so kind as to nullify the ticket, but it was difficult to catch him when he was on shift. Mailed the fine due in anyways but then a few days later my luck reversed.

By chance I bumped into the officer while on foot patrol and mentioned the whole affair. Low and behold, a couple weeks later the cheque was returned and ticket nullified!

I should mention that the officer did not see the plate mount and therefore could not comment whether legal or not. Some might argue that I modified the plate as it was now bent, but BC law only states that all letters and numbers must be visible. A matter of opinion.

Well, I don't want to do something illegal if a sticker is not ok.. but I also still don't want to drill holes..
Looking online, I did not find one option that did not require drilling..
Suction cups, are a good temp solution (thanks for the idea) but also, if I park it on public street, it is easily stolen.
There was one company that makes pretty good license plates from Us Mill works.. they screw in thru the tow hook.. but alas, not for the new 991's with Park assist

Wow!!! Really lucky man! Here, over 50km/hr over and you can lose your license for a week and car impounded.

Yeah, I was very lucky. He could've given me a reckless driving ticket, excessive speeding, and put me in the back of his cruiser as well. I was lucky that he realized that I wasn't giving him a BS story, and that I was sincere. It helped that I had a spotless driving record. I could've been in a world of hurt over this. And to be fair, it was stupid of me to step on it like that.

Im still contemplating going with no front plate vs a solution like CARMANDSL. I still have time to decide. In the meantime, I told my salesperson to make sure they don't drill holes in the front bumper.

Many P guys on the coast use a vinyl replica plate. Had one made but it didn't match 100% and liked my solution better as it left the bumper clean.

Police could argue that vinyl it is not a real plate, but some could argue I altered my plate by bending it.

Whatever, that is the chance we take in our OCD pursuit of that clean look!

A few Suggestions:

1. Move to one of these states that only require one plate in the rear:
Michigan, Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Delaware.

2. Keep the plate under the front seat and tell them the car was either in the shop, new, etc. and you haven't had a chance to put it on.

Background: in 1992 when I lived in Texas, my Honda Civic was in an accident and I had the front end repaired. The body shop forgot to put on my license plate and left it underneath the front passenger seat. Needless to say I completely forgot about the license plate and never put it on the front. A few weeks later I was pulled over (at the time I was absolutely confused as to why I was being pulled over...) by a Texas State Trooper and he said he pulled me over because I didn't have a license plate on the front. I just told him that I recently picked up my car out of the shop after the front end repair, that the body shop forgot to put i on, and it was under my front seat. He asked to see it, I showed it to him and he let me go. No warning, no ticket, just "well make sure and put that thing on there," I replied "why of course I will officer." Of course I never did. I must have been pulled over 2 or 3 more times, and I always gave them the same reason and they always let me go.

Granted all of my cars are registered in FL now so it's a non issue. But if I ever have to live and register my car in a state that requires 2 plates, you can bet I'll have 2 plates... one on the rear bumper, and one underneath the front passenger seat!

I had my front plate under the seat with the car not 2 weeks old and showed the plate, but the officer wasn't interested. (But in the end he made good. see #33 above.)

A few good suggestions. Thanks!! I'll think I'll go commando on the front and see what happens.

I went 4 years with a Boxster S with no front plate and no tickets. My 997.2 I got a of ticket after about a year of ownership and I put the front plate but I hated the look.

I wonder if when you get a ticket for no front plate, will that show up in the history if you get stopped again? I guess you can't use the excuse more than once if it shows you have been issued a ticket before

Yes, in Ontario it's the same thing. Strictly speaking, the highway traffic act says you cannot alter the plates.

Any issues with the cops so far with the new set up?

I think I'd rather drill holes in my teeth vice holes in the front bumper of a new 991.

...Just sayin'
