My wife drives a MB GL350 Bluetec and loves it. She gets low 21-23mpg around town and 28-30mpg on the highway. Not bad for a 7 passenger SUV. The diesel holds its value better that gas models too. The GL350 cost less to buy new than the GL450, but use cars sales indicate that a two year old GL350 cost more than a same age used GL450.

From that list, the Cayenne. But, have you thought about the X5 35d? I know the new 2014s are coming out, but I'm not crazy about the styling on them.

I love my X5.

The good news is you can't go wrong. Good luck!

I hate SUVs, so we have a BWM 535ix Wagon as the family car, great car, too bad they will stop importing those. The twin turbo engine is great.
In my opinion the Mercedes GL450 is one of the best SUV around, in terms of interior finish it beats all the ones in your list (again, in my opinion) and if gas expenditure is any concern the Bluetech Diesel is fantastic.

I am also looking for a second/winter car. But I wish I choices are as nice as yours.
After buying this 991 S. My options for the winter car are

1. Jeep Patriot
2. Kia Sportage
3. Mitsubishi Outland Sport.

Please help me pick one. Actually, doesn't matter. They are all cheap cars...

I drove a couple x5's for the last 6 years ('07 and '11) and loved it. Great dd although my latest one turned out to be a somewhat problematic (not worth getting into, bought a demo downhill from there). I now plan to dd my 991 through winters in upstate ny. Good snow tires and my girlfriends 2012 camry when needed, wish me luck. The salesman did everything short of a high five when I told him I definitely needed 18k per year on my lease. I plan to live behind the wheel of this thing

But I have an outside the box suggestion. I recently rented a 2013 4runner from hertz for a month via my amex points and drove it to south Florida and back. I loved it! Great simple 4wd SUV. It leans like a land rover in turns and all but it is just a solid transporter that works. If you want to save a few bucks I think the 4 runner is great. Otherwise I like the cayenne D and mb gl D.

Apologies if its already been suggested but how about the Tesla? I have driven it and its quite nice- both comfortable and reasonably sporty. Very fast straight line acceleration. Range is about 200-300 miles per charge.

Heard they had a Tesla at Porsche sales meeting in Utah last week to compare to new hybrid Panamera.

The Tesla is a great car. I have a friend with one & got to take it for a nice drive. It really is awesome if it works for your mission. We test drove the new Audi Q5 TDI. Nice performer with efficiency. It may be in my wife's future. Good luck w your hunt!

Money not too much of a factor but would like to buy pre-owned (2010-12) since I will be putting on about 90 miles total per day. I would rather buy someone else's depreciation on this purchase.

Here is what I am thinking (keep in mind I am in the NYC area and will need to deal with winter weather):

Pre-owned:
A) Cayenne S or GTS
B) Range Rover full size
C) X6

What do you think? Any other choices?
I don't understand why on earth you don't just use the 991 year-round. I've driven the 991S trough two Norwegian winters (on spikeless winter tyres), including several trips to mountains 1100 - 1200 meters above sea level.

I have been using 991 all year round but now I am moving farther from the City and don't feel like putting on 90 miles per day to go to work - now my travel is 10 miles. I am contemplating a GT3 in about 1-1.5 years and dont want to completely depreciate this car. The base to "S" move wasn't enough juice for me to make a switch but the new GT3 is. So should have been this more clear. Need a daily driver (pre-owned so someone else has paid for depreciation) for during the week and I will use the 991 for weekends. Eventually, will give back for a GT3 probably by 1.5 years.

I just replaced my 958 GTS with the Toyota version of the Lexus GX460 an I love it, very comfortable, luxurious enough and solid as a vault.
The GTS was fantastic but I always felt it was too much for a DD (also a long drive and bad roads to work)
My wife has the new ML350 and a BMW X5 before that, and I rather drive my new Japanese DD any day.

Try a Cayenne Diesel. I had a loaner and was impressed. Whatever you do, get winter tires because of the snow and ice and the potholes.

He's in the US. It doesn't matter what type of tires, drivetrain, differential, traction control, or brakes are on his car. The critical component is the nut behind the wheel of the car that will eventually slide or skid into his.
