Default Rear pzeros

Hi, 1st post for me on this forum, but ive been reading!!

I recently bought a 2012 991 S with 3500km on the clock, now @4500. LOVE DA MACHINE. Had a c63 previously and did a short stint in a Cayman after...sold me to the brand but needed more oumph. Different worlds altogether.

I have a slow leak in the left rear tire (screw). Porsche said they are told NOT to repair these tires as the "integrity" of the tire is no longer. But they do on Panameras and Cayennes.....
2 questions.
1- should I have the tire plugged somewhere else and go with it?
2- if not, do i buy just one tire or a pair? On my c63, the rear pzeros lasted not much more than 5k km, maybe 6k......

Get 1 but when time comes to replace due to tread wear, replace both at that time.

That's the same as replacing both now. Either way, you end up tossing a half-worn tire.

If your past experience shows the tires only last 5-6K Km then they are almost gone now. If so replace them both. On the other hand if you don't do any track or high speed driving then plug it until it's time for replacement.

You could take your Porsche to a reputable tire & wheel center in your area and let them take a look at the tire and also measure the tread depth of the other rear. Then you can make an informed decision on both items.

I had the same happen with one of my rear tires. I had done two track days prior to this happening. They recommended not to plug the tire (as I expected they would being a dealer of course). The dealer measured the treadwear and insisted that both tires should be replaced as the unevenness between the two if I replaced only one would be too great. Tire warranty thankfully paid for one of them so de facto replaced half worn rears with two new for 1/2 price.

Get a quality tire shop to patch and plug from the inside and you'll be fine.
Oh, and make sure they know your rim is new and in perfect condition and if they don't return it that way they're buying you a new one!

+1....I have patched (and plugged) tires for years on my 911 with no issues whatsoever. Nails are so common these days, unfort, that you would be replacing tires far too often. The main thing is to find a good shop that knows the guidelines of when you can/cannot patch a tire....all of which depends on the nail position.

If done right, should not be an issue at all. heck, I hate to admit it, but I even took a patched tire to a DE event...handled perfectly.

+2. There is no way a properly plugged and patched tire won't be okay for the rest of its tread life. A good tire shop will tell you if the belts, nail placement, etc. compromise the safety of the tire.
On a Cayman forum a few years ago, one poster there told everyone replacing tires for a nail hole, that he would gladly pay shipping for their tires to his house so he could use them.

Thanks a lot, much appreciated. Anyone knows of a good porsche/tire shop in Montreal?
They seem to be in good shape still, as the previous owner was very/too gentle with the car! Also, stupid math but here i go: 295 sections for 400hp and 325lbs torque vs 255 sections for 450hp and 430lbs torque on the c63, something tells me the rears on the 911 should last longer!

On my 996 TT Cab I get twice the mileage on fronts as rears. I'm reading the same thing for the 991's. With all that weight hanging out the back the 911 has almost always been hard on rear tires especially if you drive in a "sporting manner".

Had the tire patched yday by a good shop. Told me the tire lost its speed rating. I dont plan on pushing it to its limit just yet.
On another note, because of my lack of attention, the tires were@ 28 front and 33 rear psi.....10 down vs suggested pressure...wow....what a difference it makes...rock hard on not so good Qc roads but curves are so much more interesting now!

Check you manual for the correct tire pressure. The door sticker lists "full load" tire pressures, which means 2+ people and luggage. There is a different PSI for the car when not fully loaded.
