am I the only one starting to really dislike the 991

Not to worry Chuck, my friend. It is all going as I have foreseen.
Love those 997 Cup, 991, 993 photos. Awesome machines. Thanks! The 991 was looking kind of small next to the 997 unless my reading glasses got a little foggy.

The thread below gives you a visual comparison of the 993 versus the 991. From the specifications I have seen in my old 993 owner's manual compared to my 991 manual...the difference in width between the 2 cars amounts to if I remember correctly, 4 inches max, which is not that much.

That thread is hilarious. To me, the 993 ls an admirable last gasp, a committee designed car assigned to help the brand survive until the aging classic could be replaced by a modern competitive design (996). Only the interior (ergonomic nightmare of complexity replacing simplicity) has more themes and "updates" stuck together. When it came along I was convinced to keep my 78SC for another 15 years. It was not until the 997 that Porsche got it the way I like it- and the 991 is to me a very clear evolution.

I don't know how anyone could look at that beautiful image of DBTY's car and complain about anything so absolutely gorgeous.
Unless, well, please don't tell me that picture was taken in Yosemite and the tree in the background is a giant sequioa....

I'm sure there is some old guy somewhere saying there was never anything good after the Ford Model T. Porsche's approach in auto development has been incremental. The company has been at the forefront of automotive technology for a half century or so. If people cannot deal with technological change, I would recommend they buy Yugos or the new Chinese Trumphchei not a modern Porsche. Seriously I think the purist argument is dead. I have yet to see a so-called, self-proclaimed purist rip out his or her anti-lock brakes and air conditioner. Purist arguments are full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Drifting
I haven't read all the posts, but I did sit inside a 991 at the dealer a few weeks ago. It felt bigger than my 997. I also sat in the new Boxster. My 997 feels somewhere between the new Boxster and the 991 in size.
I won't cast judgement. It is just what it is. Sure the modern 991 has elements of the ol'e 911 design, but it is much larger. That doesn't make it less a sports car- People's expectations for a car are different in 2012 than in the 1960s, plus technology has advanced more than a tad over that half century as well, so automotive engineers can do things now that were impossible before.
As for the OP- Life is short- if you can afford to drive what you want, then don't drive what you don't want. If you like the 356 but don't want an old car, maybe consider a Beck Speedster http://www.beckspeedster.com/ or something similar.
