Just confirmed a new order with my friendly local dealer. Nice guys.
Most surprisingly, build is mid-November and delivery date is estimated early December.
You guys in the US seem to wait a lot longer.........

Been waiting for 6 months since paying the deposit and have another 2 months to go until presumed delivery date. Build is/was supposed to have been this month (October). Zero feedback thus far from Porsche. Slightly annoying.
Seems this is related mostly to how allocations work. Dealers effectively get allocations based on their estimated sales a year in advance. In our case I was explained something like they have three allocations of 400 cars per 4 month period (for the whole of the country). I ordered at the beginning of the second allocation start and they where all taken up already so that added 4 months.
Still, could be worse. Ferrari is two years wait...
Oh yes, this is Cape Town, South Africa.

In Canada the allocation appears to be for the country. We are low volume as far as Porsche is concerned so allocation is usually lower. I was originally told January build (when I ordered on October 1) but that got moved to December build. Now, as of yesterday (the 23rd) have been told January 23 build! Not sure why but dealer suspects because I ordered the X51 Power Kit.

Yes, you're right of course. Not to mention Chapman's Peak drive, Bain's kloof pass (my absolute favourite), Franshook pass, Duitoits kloof pass...
Bain's is a challenge. Love doing this in my MX-5. At this point I doubt the 911 can do it nicely - but I'm about to find out...

Congrats! So, what exactly did you get? It probably gets to you faster because you're closer. Just joking.

I've heard that ordering X51 involves not only the intake, head and cam but that the entire motor assembly is done differently?

I'm looking at 5/6 weeks from signing order to delivery which is pretty good.
