Why Porsche?
7th generation, still going strong! In the meantime the expansion of the Porsche line up unavoidably happened...
I believe most here,if not all, bought their first Porsche because of the iconic 911,not because of the Cayenne,Boxster,Cayman or Panamera...
So why Porsche?
What attracted you to Porsche?
Was it the shape?
The rear engine?
Performance?
Reliability?
Memories from your childhood?
Hype?
Thanks.

When I was in high school, I wanted a 914 so bad. A neighbor had one and I thought that was the coolest car ever made. Then in college, I saw my first whale tail and it was love at first sight.
Got married young, had kids young, and had to put my Porsche dreams on hold. Two years ago, my wife wanted to get me a 911 for our 30th anniversary. I didn't argue.
I was shopping new 911S' and stumbled across the 996TTin my avatar. It was love at first drive. My salesman wasn't happy.
It took me a while to get to my first Porsche, but it was worth the wait.

Went to my first import auto show in 1966 at age 16 and brought home a bunch of promo stuff. All glossy colors and photos except for a little booklet with numbers, graphs, performance data, etc from Porsche on the 911 models. Ok, I thought at the time, this is a serious car.
Fast forward 5 years. My well-to-do college roommate has just sold his 1965 Shelby 289 Cobra and gotten an orange 1971 911E Targa. Takes me for a ride and it's a revelation. It's fast, with incredibly nimble handling and great brakes, and the car is so solid it feels like it's been carved from solid block of steel. Coming from American cars of the time, I'd never experienced anything like it.
That summer I saw the movie LeMans when it was first released in theaters. The die was cast, I had to own a Porsche one day. It took 13 more years but I finally bought a new '84 Carrera 3.2 and I've owned a Porsche ever since.

I bought my first porsche because I was tired of driving on hot days and having all the heat from the engine (in my 38 plymouth) come into the passenger compartment, so I wanted a car with the engine in back. The 356 met my needs perfectly - excellent mileage (45 mpg), reliable, easy to work on.....

Reliable speed and driving satisfaction did it to me. To get seriously into autocrossing I bought a newly offered 914 2.0 (from Al Holbert, who also had a year old redundant 911 RSR that he was finished racing for a few thousand more... D'oh!). It was a trophy getter in autocross, and faster than expected at PCA DE too. After a couple of years, a 74 911 at a price that couldn't be refused came along. It was like graduating for serious DEs and more practical as an DD (only car, better in the snow). That led to a very interesting 78 SC purchased for serous DE- and kept for oh, 30 years. Then- took a test ride in a 08 Boxter S RS-60 and found that 30 years of progress had produced a car that ran rings around the SC (and had AC - first time in a P car for me and now needed in my dotage). Lost interest in speed not tracking the car. Made the mistake of test driving the 991S and woke it up again.

I'm not certain when I fell in love with Porsche. I think it was the cartoon Transformers. There was an Autobot named Jazz. He was a 911 slope nose. Loved his character and his auto form. Then there were micro machines, loved the 911 cabrio. Then I found the 356 speedster. If I had the money that is the one I would own. I still think about building a kit. Maybe next year. I love my 993 though. So Mich fun to work on and drive! Just got done brakes, brake lines, oil change, fuel and air filters and installing a 3 pt strut bar. Ran out of time for a ride tonight so first thing tomorrow morning it is.

I should add my story...
I became intrigued with Porsche engineering! I started realizing that they never do something to be different, but everything has an explanation,it's innovating...engine in the back=weight on the driving wheels, flat 6=low center of gravity etc.
All combined with great handling, braking and performance made it a no brainer.

Because I can't afford a Ferrari. Haha just kidding (well 50% of it). Porsche is very reliable, low maintenance, and connects you to the car in ways other cars cannot match, sans Ferrari which I can't afford.

Oh, and not that it's a buying point, but Porsche owners are some of the more educated yet understated and classy people I've met among supercar owners. Can't say the same thing with Ferrari and Lambo owners.

Test drove 991 S for 30 minutes and just got addicted to it! There's no substitute...that's marketing but boy it's so right!
