iPhone 5 USB/iPod Compatibility?
#31
I went to the dealer earlier today with my iPhone 5 that won't work in iPod mode. They updated PCM to 3.41 and the problem persists. I told them that other people reported it working and even tried it on a car in the showroom and it worked perfectly. I was told that since the iPhone 5 is not on their list of officially approved devices, that there's nothing they can do. Specially since iPods and iPhone 4s connect just fine.
In a nutshell : In USB iPod mode iPhone 5s with the original Apple cable can connect in other 991s but in mine only about once in twenty tries. Bluetooth works just fine but I'd like to have a setup similar to Nicoli35's (except I have the Escort SmartRadar instead of the 9500ci).
I guess the next step is to try to contact Porsche directly...

For those with problems, welcome to the world of computers. Faulty software communications standards, buggy software / firmware and drive read / write errors are everywhere. Jailbreaking iPhones probably doesn't help as it introduces more things to break, however I've never had a problem w the PCM device (at least so far).
1) Start by trying a new cable just because it's easier than some of the other items I'll describe
2) If that doesn't work, try deleting all paired devices from both the PCM. Do the same with your iPhone. Yes, I know that the problem isn't on the bluetooth radio side for most of you, but bluetooth may actually be interfering with com paths on iPod or there may be a common plist that's been corrupted. Often the car or more likely the phone will cache erroneous or corrupt information which may be causing problems. Deleting any description files on both devices may remedy the same.
3) If the above doesn't work, repeat the above and then try resetting phone under Settings / General / Reset All Settings. This will cause things like your network wireless and bluetooth settings to be reset and will require re-doing passwords, pairing, etc ... for all connected networks / devices.
4) Still not working - try backing up / erasing / restoring w iTunes.
5) Finally, if the above doesn't work use iTunes to restore iPhone to factory settings but don't restore your settings - you should now have a blank factory iPhone with no apps, music, pictures or anything other than what came in the box from Apple. Now try the phone w PCM again to see if working. If all is good incrementally restore (manually if possible) your personal settings and then try again with the PCM. If all is good, add more stuff (avoid using using iTunes as long as possible and directly access app store from your phone) for another category such as say apps only. Repeat test and add more stuff again. This is a hassle and a last resort option, but is intended to avoid restoration of any corrupt plists or cached settings that may be stored in iTunes backup from your phone (i.e., the likely cause of the problem at this stage).
Often people report things working after a firmware upgrade to the PCM or iPhone, but what is usually happening is a replacement of a corrupt file or setting. I've messed with many iPhones and Apple devices over the past 30 years. Just my 2 cents - Hope it helps someone.
cheers ...

My iPhone 5 works with iOS 7 via BT. I did not try usb yet, but now I am curious.
But what got me here is my iPod classic. I connect that in the glove box connector via a double connector that I got from BMW. It is an audio and USB connector. No track info, or control through the vehicle, but I get sound. Is that normal?

After playing with the iPod classic a bit today, I connected it with the normal apple USB connector only. It works fine. I get playlists and even album art. Not sure why I thought using the BMW connector was a good idea.

Try disabling bt on the iPhone before you get in the car next time. It might be playing the audio through the bt while the car is expecting it over USB. Also make sure the phone isn't set to silent.

I'm one week into 991 ownership. I have an iPhone 5 with iOS 7. It connects fine with BT, but will only play whatever I have teed up on my phone. Is there a way to scroll through my 60 GB of music using the Porsche screen (whatever that's called) or would I have to connect the iPhone with a cable to do that?
